EQUITY AND DUAL PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT WINTER NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2023
A message from the Director of Equity and Dual Programs
As 2024 is upon us, we extend our deepest appreciation to the members of our school communities that create a sense of belonging for our students and staff. This belonging might be in little ways, such as greeting students with a warm smile, supporting each other with words and actions, building opportunities to learn about each other or simply being present at times of need. How we create belonging matters, and we encourage you to nominate those in your school communities who demonstrate a commitment to building belonging. You can find the nomination form on our website at Building Belonging Recognition - Walla Walla Public Schools (wwps.org)

19th Annual Youth & Justice Forum
On October 20th, the Equity and Dual Programs Department team took 16 Wahi students to the Youth and Justice Forum that took place at the Richland Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Richland, WA. Students learned about the career opportunities from experienced professionals, met with local leaders in the justice system and listened to judges across our region share about their life experiences and why they chose their career paths. This was a great experience for our students!
Mrs. Martinez's ELD Classes
Students from Mrs. Martinez's ELD classes worked on learning about different cultural traditions, holidays, and celebrations. One tradition that they dug into was Dia De Los Muertos. They learned about the history, significance, and key symbols and traditions associated with the holiday. As part of their learning they were able to get hands-on experience by creating an Ofrenda. The Ofrenda is one of the most important aspects of this tradition. Students were very excited to be part of this process and they even learned a few new things. Below are some pictures of their hard work and them working together to accomplish this task.
Things to do over the holiday break
Consider things like reading a good book, going for walks, spending time with friends you haven't seen in a while, crafting or exploring new hobbies. Spend this season paying attention to the things you genuinely enjoy doing and do them.
