Support Small Business with A to Z Databases!
Three workshops have been scheduled:

Thursday, November 31 at 1pm at North Kingston Free Library
Friday, December 1 at 10 am at Westerly Public Library
Please sign up for a workshop if you are available to attend. Spotlight on: Melissa Chiavaroli
This month, the spotlight is on Melissa Chiavaroli, Head of Reference at the Cumberland Public Library. She began her career as Community Relations Manager at Barnes & Noble and was there for more than a decade. She left there to to go the West Warwick Public Library and library school at URI. She spent two years at the Seekonk Public Library as a reference librarian as her first professional position. She says, "I have been really blessed to work with librarians throughout my whole career and have been able to make connection since my days at the book store. It was a great foundation for the work I do today."
Favorite thing about being a librarian?
My favorite part of the job is that I am in a position to truly help others. Nothing is better than when we help a patron beyond their wildest expectations! I also just love our profession and being a librarian. Mentoring and professional development is a fulfilling way to give back, but just another aspect I truly enjoy.
Favorite or most successful program?
My favorite (and one of our most successful) program was actually a monthly series called "Your Best Year Yet" where we had presenters come in to help people finally cross off those items that have been on their wish list for years!
Any book recommendations?
Playing Big by Tara Sophia Mohr. I actually think this should be required reading for any woman 55 or younger. Think Lean In, but for your internal success rather than just your public face.
Follow Melissa @mischiav (she's mostly just there to read) and join us on November 8 at 9:30 am in Cumberland for the Adult Program Marketing Share and Swap (more details below).
Programs, Reading and Community Outreach
Small Business Saturday
Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday helps bring attention to the importance of supporting small businesses in communities across the United States. This year's Small Business Saturday is November 25, the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
Your library can apply to be a Neighborhood Champion by November 6th to promote small businesses to your community and to strengthen bonds with your local businesses. Being a Neighborhood Champion means agreeing to hold one community event (it doesn't have to be on the Saturday itself!), reaching out to at least ten small businesses and handing out Shop Small swag like tote bags, posters, balloons and more!
For local resources you may want to reach out to your Chamber of Commerce or your local Merchant's Association. For help or advice about promoting your event consider contacting Ryan Brissette, the Public Information Officer at the Small Business Administration at ryan.brissette@sba.gov or 401-528-4574.

Route 1 Reads: Any Romance Lovers out there?
Connecting the 2,369 miles of U.S. Route 1 from Ft. Kent, Maine, to Key West, Florida, the Route One Reads initiative is a partnership between 16 affiliate Centers for the Book to promote books that illuminate important aspects of their states or commonwealths for readers traveling the major and meandering highway.
Each year, Centers for the Book choose a theme and next year's is Romance! If you are a fan of romance or know any from within your community, the RI Center for the Book is looking for a romance either by a Rhode Island author or, even better, set in Rhode Island. Email any suggestions you might have us to help RI find something great to represent us on this list.
