Positive Digital Citizenship
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As partners in your child’s education and development, we are reaching out to address an important topic affecting our young learners' well-being and safety: the use of technology and social media.
While technology can be a powerful tool for learning, creativity, and connection, it also presents challenges, especially for elementary-aged children who are still learning to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. We are increasingly aware of students' exposure to online content, communication platforms, and social media apps that may not be age-appropriate and can impact their emotional and social development.
Your role as a parent or guardian is more important than ever. Children need guidance and boundaries as they begin to explore the digital space. Here are a few ways you can support your child:
Know what your child is using. Familiarize yourself with the apps, games, and websites your child accesses.
Set clear expectations and limits. Establish rules for screen time, app usage, and online behavior.
Have regular conversations. Talk openly with your child about what they see and do online, and let them know they can come to you with concerns.
Monitor devices. Use parental controls and check-in frequently on your child’s digital activity.
Be a model. Children learn from what we do—model balanced, respectful technology use at home.
As a school, we are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment both on and offline. We continue to teach students about digital citizenship, kindness, and making safe choices online. However, we know that these lessons are most powerful when reinforced at home.
Our school is committed to developing young minds who are responsible digital citizens. We want to reinforce positive use and a balance to secure the well-being of our students. Our technology and counseling curricula touch on digital citizenship and safe usage.
We want to highlight a powerful and timely book that speaks directly to the challenges many of our children face today: The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt.
Haidt, a respected social psychologist, explores the sharp rise in anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns among children and teens—especially since 2012. He connects this trend to what he calls the “Great Rewiring” of childhood: a major shift from active, in-person play and development to screen-based interaction and social media use.
The Anxious Generation is eye-opening, well-researched, and hopeful. It empowers parents and educators to work together to protect childhood, support emotional well-being, and create a healthier balance in this digital age.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need support. We are here to help.
Together, we can raise strong, resilient, and well-supported children—both online and offline. Let’s work as a team to ensure they are protected, supported, and guided every step of the way.
In Christ,
Mrs. Ana E.Gomez, M.Ed.
