Notes from Administration
We just completed our Attendance Meeting with Brenda Harne, our Pupil Personnel Worker. Thank you to everyone who has been here on time and stayed all day! It is making a difference. To our families who are arriving late, let's work to get into the building by 8:45 each day!
Again, lots to celebrate here at WHES! Thanks for giving us the best kiddos in all of Frederick!

STEM NIGHT WAS A SUCCESS!
Many thanks to the students, families, and staff members who participated in STEM Night! It was fun and educational and highlighted the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math. The STEM club was overwhelmed by all of the donations they received and your generosity and participation was appreciated!

Kindergarten/PreK Registration Open NOW
Kindergarten/Pre-K Registration is now open! To register your child for these programs, please bring:
- Birth Certificate
- Immunizations
- Proof of Residence (gas or electric bill or lease) (no Verizon or Comcast Bills)
Pre-K also needs:
- Proof of Income – W2 or 3 paychecks from last 6 months for anyone working in household.

Learn about school safety planning and how you can keep students safe.
* Guests may park in the bus space at the back of the school and use the entrance between the auditorium and cafeteria. As you enter, the auditorium will be on your right.
FCPS will offer the same presentation all high schools for each feeder pattern.

PTA News
As our 2018-2019 school year approaches, we are looking to fill crucial roles for the incoming PTA board. Serving on the PTA board means a commitment to strengthening the connection between school, home and community and is an incredibly rewarding way to be a positive influence at Whittier Elementary School.
- If you are interested in any of the following roles, please contact the nominating committee, Amanda Cecil at acecil36@gmail.com or Sarah Leembruggen at sleembruggen@me.com. Amanda and Sarah will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
- There will be a general PTA meeting on Monday 4/23 at 6:30 pm and that is also a good time to meet current board members, ask questions about their roles and see how the PTA works.
- The Whittier PTA has achieved a great deal over the past year, please join us to continue the commitment to our wonderful school community!
Board Positions
President
- Preside at all meetings of this local PTA, the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee.
- Coordinate the work of officers and committees of this local PTA in order that the purposes may be promoted.
- Be a member ex officio of all committees except the nominating committee.
- Perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA or by the Board of Directors.
- Review bank statements monthly and sign.
- Represent this PTA at all council meetings or assign an alternate.
1st Vice President
- Act as aide(s) to the President.
- In their designed order perform duties of the President in the absence or inability of that officer to serve.
- Perform such other duties as may be described in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA or by the Board of Directors.
Secretary
- Record the minutes of all meetings of this local PTA, the Board of Directors, and Executive Committee.
- Be prepared to read the records of the previous meetings.
- File all records.
- Have a current copy of the bylaws.
- Maintain a current membership list.
- Perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA or by the Board of Directors.
Treasurer
- Have custody of all funds of this local PTA.
- Keep a full accurate account of receipts and expenditures including reconciliation of the bank statement each month.
- Make disbursements as authorized by the President or Board of Directors of this local PTA in accordance with the budget adopted by this local PTA.
- Present a written financial statement at every meeting of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the General Membership and at other times when requested by the Board of Directors.
- Make a full report before the newly elected officers officially assume their duties.
- Be responsible for the maintenance of such books of account and records as to conform to the requirements of Article IV section 14 of the current bylaws.
- Be responsible for preparing and filing all necessary tax forms and submitting a copy to the Maryland PTA office within 30 days of filing.
- Have the accounts examined at the close of the fiscal year and/or upon change of Treasurer by an auditor or an auditing committee shall be selected by the Board of Directors atleast 30 days before the new officers assume their duties.
- Perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA or by the Board of Directors.
Our next PTA meeting is April 23rd @ 6:30. We love all of the new faces that we see at our meetings. Thanks to all committee chairs who attend the monthly meetings. This is important so that your voice can be heard, the PTA knows how your committee or event is progressing. As a committee chair, if you are unable to attend a PTA meeting - please send a report to our PTA Executive Board so that we are all communicating clearly.

CAREER DAY
We are quickly approaching our yearly Career Day and are looking for volunteer speakers! For the past few years, Whittier has hosted 10-15 speakers to share their careers with our fifth grade students. Each speaker shares for a 20 minute block in each of our five fifth grade classrooms. During these blocks, students have the opportunity to explore new careers and ask questions. Career Day is scheduled for May 16th from 1:15-3:15. Please contact our Guidance Counselors - Carleigh Rich at 240-236-3135 or Lisa Reese at 240-236-3170 - if you are interested in participating this year. Thank you!
Our own Ms. Dattoli was nominated to be Maryland's School Librarian of the Year!
Congratulations to Tina Dattoli on her nomination as Maryland School Librarian of the Year. Although, she did not make it to the finalist round, she is the best in our book! Way to Go Ms. Dattoli- Thank you for all your hard work!

- It’s the original Frederick twilight race on June 23rd, 7:30PM and it’s only 10 weeks away.
- This is BIAB’s biggest and most important FUNdraiser of the year. The success of this event is crucial to ensuring hunger-free weekends for hundreds of our BIAB kids. Success depends on each of us, on all of us, so we’d be very grateful for any help you can offer.
