DID YOU KNOW?😲
CDO Youth and Government
Model Legislature and Model Court at the AZ Capitol
Twenty students from CDO attended the YMCA’s 77th Annual Model Legislature and Model Court program at the State Capitol from Friday, December 6th to Sunday, December 8th.
CDO represented with 2 State Senators, 3 State Representatives, 5 members of the AZ Supreme Court (4 attorneys and 1 justice), 4 members of the Press Corps, and 6 Lobbyists or Legislative staffers.
Highlights included:
Court: CDO attorneys working together to win four of the four cases they argued in front of the Supreme Court (Cases were regarding laws that around a TikTok ban, a DUI/Search and Seizure case, Saudi Arabia government and corporations land/water usage in AZ, and ID Requirements for Voting).
Legislature: All 5 of the bills written by CDO students passed out of their respective committees and all 5 passed through their respective groups (Senate and House of Representatives). Four of the 5 bills were passed by the full session of the Legislature. The Bills written by CDO students included increased funding through lottery revenue to CTE programs in schools, requirement of common curriculum to be required of Freshmen in public and private schools regarding mental health, soil desalination of lands used for agriculture, requirement of financial literacy curriculum in high schools, and a mental health access and equity bill. One CDO student (Hailey Collins) was pulled from the House floor to talk to a group of YMCA Board members and actual AZ Representatives about her bill because they were so impressed and interested in passing something like it in the actual AZ Legislature.
Press Corps: All four members representing CDO in the Press Corp had pieces published in the newspaper or produced on “T.V. news”
Legislative Staff: These members served as committee clerks and then clerks on the floors of the House and Senate. They tallied votes, announced bills, ran the microphone systems, and sent important messages through the pages to members of the Legislature. One of our Legislative Staff (Gavin Yewell) won an award for the best staffer.
We also had one student, Cailin Musgrave, run for next year’s Attorney General, and while she did not win the general election, she did a great job giving her speech, participating in a debate, and campaigning throughout the weekend, while still doing her duties as a State Senator.
Fine Arts
Many of our amazing Fine Arts groups performed over the last few weeks to close out the semester. As you already know, we have so many talented student artists at CDO from our Choir and Dance programs, our Theatre program, our Orchestra program and our Band program. We also cannot forget about our visual artists in Photography and 2D Art as well. Some of these programs are featured below.
Dunkin comes to CDO to take care of our staff and kids!
