Sagebrush Elementary
Family Update 2/21/2025
Message from the Principal
Dear Sagebrush Families,
On Monday, we will be practicing a LOCKDOWN active threat drill. The intent of this drill is to practice our response to a situation where a LOCKDOWN is called, and police and district security personnel come to the school to help manage the situation.
When a LOCKDOWN alert is called, staff and students are trained to either secure themselves behind locked doors, remain silent, and out of sight, or self-evacuate if they are in a position where it is safe to do so. Police and District Security personnel are trained to rapidly respond to secure the school and check on staff and students by eventually entering and/or evacuating every room.
During a LOCKDOWN, adrenaline is often high for staff, students, and first responders. Therefore, it is very important to implement strategies that can help reduce anxiety and bring everyone back to a state of calm and reassurance.
One way to do this is to communicate a “code word” through our Redbag software to all classrooms, that will be used by responding officers and security personnel to reassure staff and students inside locked classrooms that police are knocking on the door and notifying classrooms they are coming in or requesting the occupants to come out. These “code words” are not pre-determined, but rather generated during the incident to allow for maximum security of the incident.
During the spring lockdown drills will use the “code word” system to practice this procedure.
As always, the drill we will be supported by District Security, School District Administration, Law Enforcement, and Fire/EMS personnel who will assist us in checking doors and classrooms and coaching us through the process. This is important as all of them will have a part in responding to help.
Each drill should take approximately 30 minutes as we practice various aspects of our LOCKDOWN procedure.
At the conclusion of the drill, our building Safety Team will debrief the drill to discuss lessons learned and provide us with strategies to improve our response. We invite all staff and students to provide feedback and ask questions about the process so that we can continuously improve our practice.
Thank you for participating with us in this important training event. Please feel free to contact myself or our District Security Team if you have any questions.
Warm regards,
Chris Powell
Principal

A Message from our Superintendent
Dear Cherry Creek Schools community,
As I mentioned in my message earlier this week, one of the areas of great uncertainty right now is around funding. Unfortunately, funding for K-12 public education is at risk. While it is too soon to know the extent of any federal funding that may be cut, we face another more immediate threat in the funding we receive at the state level. After nearly 15 years of more than $11 billion being cut from K-12 public education, the state is trying to do it again.
Governor Polis and state lawmakers are looking to make a major change to the way it funds schools that will drastically cut funding from 80% of school districts across Colorado, including $17 million from Cherry Creek Schools. This proposal would dramatically change the way the state funds K-12 education, moving from an enrollment averaging formula to a single annual student count. Enrollment averaging is a 30-year practice in the State of Colorado that provides stability and predictability for school districts to invest in students and ensure they have the resources they need rather than being forced to constantly adjust to drastic swings in funding due to small changes in enrollment. Eliminating averaging would have a disproportionate and immediate impact on schools, leaving many students across the state without the resources they need as soon as the 2025-26 school year.
Facing a budget deficit, the state is once again trying to cut K-12 education in order to balance the budget at the expense of our students and teachers. Any cut in funding would have a districtwide impact on all students resulting in staff layoffs, larger class sizes, reduced student offerings, and more. We need your help to let state lawmakers know these cuts are unacceptable, especially at a time of great uncertainty at the federal level. Public school districts have been used to balance the state’s budget for the past 15 years. The state must balance its budget somewhere else. Please visit www.kidsmattertoo.org to send a letter or click here to call CCSD lawmakers.
These cuts are unacceptable, and our kids deserve better. I urge you to make your voice heard today.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Cherry Creek Schools!
Sincerely,
Christopher Smith
Superintendent
