What's Happening
See Something, Say Something Week
Each year, thousands of schools and youth organizations nationwide participate in See Something Say Something Week! The weeklong campaign celebrates the importance of trusted adults and encourages students to take an active role in reporting violence to keep schools safer.
Each day the week of March 3-7th students should listen to the announcements about some helpful tips on things to report to keep their school safe and what it means to work together as Panthers to provide a safe school environment.
In celebration of See Something Say Something week we will have a color spirit week!
Student Names for 24-25 Yearbook
Due to changes in federal guidelines and upcoming deadlines for yearbook submissions, we want to ensure that all students and families are comfortable with the name published in school media.
If your student uses their legal name at school, you do not need to take any action.
However, if your student regularly uses a name different from their legal name (for example, a nickname or middle name), please complete this consent form and have your student return it to the office.
If we do not receive a completed form, your student's legal name will be used in the yearbook and in other media. Please note: Even if you have previously indicated a nickname on Final Forms, we still require this new consent form.
For yearbook consideration, this form is due March 5th.
26-26 Music Class Selections
Students met with school counselors today to discuss their music selections and fill out a scheduling survey. They were sent home with the following information.
---
Dear Norton Middle School 5th-7th Grade Families,
Today, we met with your student to discuss scheduling options for next school year. In addition to required electives (tech, PE, etc), students have the option to choose their preferred music program.
Your student chose (student will have checked a box):
Band
Choir
Both
Neither *Note: Students who select "Neither" will likely be placed in another, graded class. Study hall may not be available, therefore, students are discouraged from dropping band or choir with the expectation of receiving a study hall period.
If you or your child would like to change this selection, please email your school counselor by Friday March 7th, 2025. Music selections will be finalized after this date. These numbers will be used to design the master schedule and cannot be altered after the deadline. Students will remain in their chosen class for the entire 2025-2026 school year.
Upcoming Assemblies on Social Inclusion & Positive Communication
At Norton Middle School, we are committed to fostering a supportive and respectful school environment. As part of this effort, we will be hosting two upcoming assemblies focused on key aspects of student growth and character development.
Social Inclusion Assembly - March 21, 2025
In alignment with House Bill 123, also known as the Safety and Violence Education (SAVE) Students Act, Ohio schools are required to teach social inclusion to students in grades 6–12. This law, passed in 2020, aims to improve student safety and well-being by helping students recognize and address social isolation.
The social inclusion instruction will cover:
- Identifying social isolation in others
- Understanding the importance of social connection
- Knowing how to help peers who are socially isolated
- Using strategies to increase social inclusion in the classroom and school
How is the instruction provided?
- At least one hour of evidence-based instruction per school year
- Age-appropriate lessons that engage students in discussions and activities
- Use of evidence-based programs to support learning
Positive Communication Assembly - March 28, 2025
This assembly will focus on The Panther Way competency of communication. Middle school students often struggle with expressing themselves appropriately, and at times, their words can be hurtful. The assembly will emphasize the importance of respectful communication. Students will also learn how certain words and phrases (especially those tied to another student’s race, culture, or disability) can carry a deeper impact. The goal is to help students develop the skills needed to engage in kind and positive conversations.
Families who prefer their child not to participate in either assembly may opt out by emailing your student's school counselor. If you have any questions or would like more details about the content covered, please feel free to reach out to the school counselor for more information.
