The Dragon Review
December 2023
Principal's Announcement
December 2023
Hello Dragon Nation!
As we approach the conclusion of 2023, BTHS continues to strive for excellence. Marking period 2 progress reports are available for parent review in the student portal. This past month we recognized approximately twenty five students for their high academic achievement and contributions of community service through induction into the BTHS chapter of the National Honor Society. It was an amazing night to behold as students and staff connected over their love of learning and pursuit of excellence. Congratulations to all of our current and newly inducted students.
With the same emphasis on excellence, BTHS honored and recognized two outstanding faculty members as we named our Governor’s Educators of the Year. Mrs. Courtney Gough-Robinson was named the Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Gough-Robinson serves as a Special Education English teacher and advisor to our Student Government Association. Mrs. Lauren Ianniello was named the Educational Service Professional of the Year. Mrs. Ianniello supports the BTHS learning community as a Guidance Counselor, Anti-Bullying Specialist, class advisor, and coach. These individuals are recognized school leaders, consistently making positive contributions to our school community.
We continue to engage our student body in co-curricular activities and events focused on developing the whole student. This past month also saw many highlights from the visual and performing arts department. The Drama Club put on a wonderful rendition of “A Christmas Carol” with many outstanding individual performances. Continuing the support of our VPA department, we held our Winter Band and Chorus concert on Wednesday, December 13. Students and staff were further engaged with an opportunity to view the wonderful talents of our performing arts students as we held a performance during Block 4 on Wednesday, December 20. Each of these performances were awe inspiring as students displayed their musical and theatrical talents. I continue to be impressed with the performances of our students.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Dragon families a happy and healthy holiday season. Earlier this month BTHS staff and students took a moment to reflect on the elements within Brick Township High School that brought them the most joy. The responses were recorded on ornament shaped paper and hung in the main entrance of our building. It was great to read the responses and see all of the various actions, interactions, and activities connected to BTHS that bring a level of happiness and joy to our school community. I continue to be humbled and grateful for the staff, students, and parents that make up our school’s learning community. I am honored to be the principal of Brick Township High School, where individuals regularly support one another in realizing and achieving their fullest potential. I hope everyone is able to take a few moments over the Winter Break to reflect on the past year, recognizing the individual gains each of us has achieved while prioritizing future goals. The new year will bring new opportunities and learning experiences. I look forward to meeting the challenges and successes of the new year in partnership with our school community.
“Celebrate endings-for they precede new beginnings.” ~ Jonathan Huie
Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Respectfully,
David Kasyan, Ed.D.

Health Office Message
Season Greetings, BTHS Community!
During the holidays many individuals spend time with family and friends and even exchange gifts. It is important to acknowledge and briefly discuss two important National Health Observances during December. Child and Family Services recognizes National Safe Toys & Gifts Month during December. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has compiled a list based on research of safety tips to consider while we shop for our family and friends this holiday season. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that you follow the age recommendations for items that you are purchasing and that each item be thoroughly inspected before gifted to a child. Look for any sharp edges, chords, and removable parts that are small, such as batteries or magnets- these items could be dangerous! Any active toys for outside, such as a bicycle, skateboard, scooter or dirt bike, should be appropriate for the child’s size. In addition, the child should receive any safety gear needed, such as a helmet, protective eyewear, and protective pads to prevent injury.
In addition, it is important that we recognize National Handwashing Awareness (Dec. 5th-11th). During this season let’s spread kindness and cheer and not germs by performing proper hand washing to help keep our hands clean and prevent the spread of illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed their campaign- Life is better with Clean Hands, to motivate individuals to keep their hands clean and promote a healthy lifestyle with 5 easy steps:
Wet your hands with clean, running water and apply soap.
Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap (front/back, between your fingers, and under your nails).
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds- the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
Dry your hands using a clean towel or an air dryer.
Sanitizer can also be used to get rid of germs, but will not be as effective if your hands are visibly dirty or greasy. Research shows that we could prevent, “1 in 3 diarrhea-related illnesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu,” with proper handwashing (www.cdc.gov/handwashing). Proper hand washing can aid in keeping ourselves, as well as our friends and family healthy as we gather and spread joy and cheer during this holiday season and all year long.
A few friendly reminders from the BTHS Health Office:
Please do not hesitate to bring any important health-related information to the attention of the health office. Students should stay home when not feeling well or developing signs of illness.
Notification: If your child has tested positive for the Flu or COVID-19, please contact Mrs. Yarbrough in the health office.
