The Tiger Times
Week of October 6, 2024
Hello Ragsdale Families,
This is Noel Keener, the proud principal of Ragsdale High, with this week's updates.
We had a fantastic 6th week of school! The best day was Tuesday, when our 10th and 11th graders worked so hard on the PSAT, our 9th graders enjoyed enrichment activities, and our 12th graders were able to spend time preparing for time after high school. We ended the day with a hugely successful senior parent night. We are so thankful for the engagement of students and parents!
Monday at 5:45 we will have a PTA Meeting in our media center. Our Athletic Booster club meeting has been moved to Wednesday at 6:30pm., also in the media center. Please come out and learn more about how we can support our Tigers!
Interim grade reports will be sent out through Document Delivery on Wednesday, October 9th. Our first quarter ends November 1st!
This week is HOMECOMING! Thanks to the hard work of our Student Council, we have lots of fun events planned including spirit days, a canned food drive, spirit chains, powderpuff football, and a pep rally. Tomorrow starts spirit week with pajama day!
Please come out to support our football team Friday evening as we play Grimsley and our homecoming court will be announced at halftime. Our homecoming events come to a close with our dance on Saturday from 8-11 pm. Tickets are sold at lunch for $15, and students must present their ticket AND a photo ID to gain entry to the dance. Tickets are only valid to the student they were sold to - they can not be given away or swapped. With us being six weeks in, interim grade reports will be sent out through Document Delivery on Wednesday, October 9th. Our first quarter ends November 1st!
As we near the end of the first quarter, there are some important reminders for you.
- Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed during classroom instruction.
- We will continue to uphold the dress code. This means that crop tops and muscle shirts, bandanas, and clothing with inappropriate graphics are not allowed. See the full policy on our website.
- Drivers- you MUST have a pass to park on campus. Also drivers, at your 6th unexcused tardy to school of quarter, your parking pass will be suspend for the rest of the quarter or 30 days- whichever is longer.
- Students have 5 minutes to get to class, after the bell rings, students are considered tardy.
- Restroom use should be limited during instructional times. Restrooms are open and available during passing periods and at lunch.
All seniors must have an MCV Booster or documented exemption; per state law, seniors who do not have this booster will be excluded from school starting Tuesday, October 8. Seniors missing this immunization have been notified for the past few weeks. If you are not sure if your child needs the MCV Immunization Booster, please reach out to the school. You can also go to your doctor or GC Dept of Public Health. Documentation must be sent or brought to the school.
We look forward to seeing you Monday at 8:55!
Thank you , have a great week, and, as always, TIGER PRIDE!

Sales Tax Referendum
On November 5th, voters in Guilford County will consider a sales tax referendum. If the sales tax referendum passes, GCS will use the additional funding to recruit and retain effective teachers and increase compensation for frontline workers.
Sales Tax FAQs
Will the sales tax apply to all purchases?
- The sales tax would not affect essential items such as gas, groceries or prescription medication.
If the sales tax referendum passes, how much more will I pay?
- The proposed sales tax increase is 0.25% (a fraction of a penny). It will increase the sales tax in Guilford County from its current rate of 6.75% to 7%.
- The fraction of a penny tax amount would equal an additional five pennies on a $20 purchase. With tax, a $20 item would cost $21.40 instead of $21.35.
How much could the district expect to bring in from the sales tax increase?
- County government officials could see about $25 million per year in revenue.
- The referendum will distribute the cost of education to both visitors and residents alike.
How will the sales tax money be used?
- If the sales tax referendum passes, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners has committed to allocating the additional funding to increase compensation for teachers and frontline workers.
How will the sales tax money benefit frontline workers, including cafeteria workers, custodial staff, mechanics and bus drivers?
- If the sales tax referendum passes, it would help Guilford County Schools provide more competitive wages to frontline workers.
How does Guilford County’s sales tax compare to other area counties?
- Many surrounding counties, including Forsyth, Davidson, Randolph and Rockingham counties, already have a 7% sales tax. Wake and Mecklenburg counties are at 7.25%; Durham is at 7.5%.
How does Guilford County Schools’ pay scale for teachers compare to other area counties?
- Current teacher salaries in Guilford County are, on average, 35% lower than those in peer counties (Forsyth, Durham, Mecklenburg, and Wake).
