The Burbank Animal Shelter Needs Your Help!
Each year hundreds of tiny kittens are turned in at the Burbank Animal Shelter, but the shelter simply does not have room to house them all. The VBAS started our Kitten Foster Program (KFP) back in 2001 to house and care for these kittens, and each year we foster ~300 kittens. Without the Kitten Foster Program these kittens would be euthanized.
KFP fostered 385 kittens in 2023 (it was a very busy year), and we're getting ready to do it again in 2024. The kitten season goes from March until October/November with May/June/July traditionally being the busiest months. We are * very* much in need of more foster homes, especially in the May-August timeframe. With this in mind, we are reaching out to local high schools in Burbank to spread the word and recruit more fosters.
Fosters must be 18 years of age, so students' parents need to be involved and onboarded as well, but it's a great family activity, it is extremely rewarding, and it saves so many lives. Hours spent fostering can be used for community service, so it really can be a win-win for all involved.
Fostering is a bit of work, but it's a LOT of fun. The program supplies training, all supplies and medical care. The foster families provide a warm safe and loving home for a month or two, and they get to play with little kittens. (Yes, it is as good as it sounds).
Click on the link below, and check out some pictures of our amazing rescues and fosters!
Just like most schools across the country, BUSD schools, including BHS, have caught students vaping. Daily, our administrators and campus supervisors sweep student restrooms for those who are vaping. However, it is impossible to be present in all student restrooms all the time--particularly due to student privacy laws and laws against unreasonable searches. Unlike other schools, the vapes at BHS are primarily nicotine vapes. Occasionally, we do find marijuana vapes, but most are not.
We do the best we can, and the following consequences are in place:
1. For marijuana vapes: Students are suspended.
2. For nicotine vapes: First offense: Saturday school and anti-vaping class
Additional offenses: Saturday school; parent conference; possible referral to
counseling and a different school placement.
3. Any students caught selling vapes of any kind are subject to suspension and expulsion.
Students may NOT vape at all while on campus. This includes the front steps of the schools, parking garage, football field, restrooms, and any other place considered to be on campus.
Please see the following resources below for additional information. You can contact BHS if you or your child need support with quitting vaping.
