WHY ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT
School districts across the country often use chronic absenteeism when looking at student data. To be considered chronically absent a student must miss at least 10% of the school year, whether they are excused or unexcused. To be considered chronically absent at Albert Lea, students must miss at least 17 days of school.
The graphic to the right is attendance data of Southwest students from 2017 who were considered to be chronically absent through last year. Two school years, 2019-2020 & 2020-2021, were not included due to the Covid Pandemic. The number of chronically absent students have almost doubled.
The graphic below shows what happens if a student, on average, misses 2 days of school a month and also if they were to miss, on average, 4 days of school a month.
As you can see, attendance matters. The Southwest staff wants all of our students to do well and succeed in life and being at school on a regular basis is a key part of that. We know the attendance issue needs to be addressed and we also know that we can’t do this alone. Southwest and families need to work together to make sure all of our students are attending school on a regular basis.
Here are a couple of key updates to our attendance policy:
On top of this we will give all of our families updated information throughout the year on our attendance data.
