Week 5 - Fall Semester
Dear Families, Students, Staff and Teachers,
The 5 week report cards will be mailed home this Friday. If you don't receive them, please call our school for more information.
As you know, we are anticipating significant heat again this week. Please know that as always, we will prioritize the safety and well-being of our students.
We will continue to implement the following measures to ensure that we provide a safe and comfortable learning environment:
- Modified schedules for recess/nutrition/lunch to ensure that students are not outdoors for an excessive amount of time.
- Modified activities during physical education and Beyond the Bell programs.
- Rescheduled or modified activities for athletics or clubs that involve outdoor play.
- Working with our Building and Grounds team to ensure that our HVAC systems are fully operational.
- If an air conditioner goes out in a classroom, affected students will be relocated to cooler spaces on campus until repairs are made.
- Keeping doors and windows closed in air-conditioned rooms.
- Providing students with frequent reminders and opportunities to drink water.
- Observing students during physical activity periods and modifying and/or limiting activities as necessary.
- Limiting the use of asphalt, concrete, playground equipment and artificial turf surfaces to cooler early hours if these surfaces are too hot.
To support us in this effort, please consider the following:
- Wear comfortable clothing that is breathable, light colored, lightweight and loose.
- Apply sunscreen and wear proper clothing and hats to prevent sunburn for times when students may be outside, such as if they walk to or from school.
- Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration and bring liquids and snacks as appropriate. Just as a reminder, water containers should not be shared between students and students may not consume food or drink while riding District buses.
- If your student has any underlying health conditions exacerbated by heat, inform the school nurse or classroom teacher.
- Symptoms of heat related illness, such as fatigue, fainting, dehydration, thirst or muscle cramps, should be reported to a coach or teacher immediately.
Thank you as always for your support of our school community. We especially want to thank all of Los Angeles Unified’s dedicated staff members who work hard to keep our power and air conditioners functioning and our schools as cool as possible for our school communities.
Additional information on preventing heat stress may be found at www.lausd.org/oehs with the latest information from LA Unified available at @laschools.
Should you have any questions, please contact the main office. Please see below for news, announcements and great opportunities!
Respectfully,
Marly Escobar Suarez
