🐦 This week students will be reading the story, The Tale of the Hummingbird. This story originates from Puerto Rico and is told by Pura Belpre. This story employs several themes concerning love, choices, and the unfair judgment of people by society. Like most creation stories, it describes the origin of an element of the natural world and features the intervention of a supernatural being in human lives.

📋 In this lesson students will:

• Determine a theme or central idea of a text.

• Analyze how parts of a text contribute to the theme.

• Consult reference materials to clarify word meaning.

• Cite textual evidence to support analysis.

• Demonstrate understanding of multiple perspectives through paraphrasing.

• Distinguish among connotations of words with similar denotations.

• Conduct short research projects.

📖 Homework:

• 15-20 minutes of reading from a book of their choice.

• Work that students are unable to complete during class.

• Work that students miss when they are out of school for sickness, travel, etc.

• Test Retake Assignments

🪙 We are continuing our work on integers, opposites and absolute value! We are also working on the values of fractions, decimals and money! Many kids seem to not remember their coins! Ask your student if they know their nickles, dimes, and quarters! We don't use cash much these days - but still need to know the basics.

👩🏽‍🔬 Last week in science class we finished up the week with a gravity and inertia lab and a quiz. The students had a fun time watching inertia and gravity work together. I'm sure all my students would be happy to demonstrate this lab for you if you have some plastic cups, index cards, and a piece of string. 😊

🪐 This week we are starting Unit 7, Our Solar System. We will explore the phenomenon of solar system composition and scale by making a physical model. We will explore the compositional and physical differences among the planets, the Moon, and other solar system objects. By focusing on the recent history of solar system exploration, we will discover that only Earth possesses the fortuitous combination of factors that support life.

⛰️ This week, we continue our unit, Earth's Processes and Patterns. In this unit, students will explore foundational geography concepts, including landforms, tectonic processes, climates, ecosystems, and the impact of human decisions on natural systems. This unit aims to help students make connections between physical geography and the human experience by examining the relationships between land, climate, ecosystems, and people.

• World Climate Zones and Their Characteristics
• Exploring Ecosystems Around the World

💻 Please note, our Google Classroom has many resources, including videos and online games students can access anytime to help reinforce the concepts we are studying in class. I will share a few favorites below.

💯 6th grade is reviewing the alphabet, and starting to learn how to count to 100 in Spanish.

Show your Kingsley pride with new spirit wear! The sale begins on November 4th and will be conducted through paper order forms only. Paper order forms are available in the office or print your own at home with the link below. Be sure to submit orders by the deadline - November 15th.

Our sock sale is also in full swing, with sizes from kids’ 10 up to men’s 15. Socks are $10 per pair, or $9 each when you order 3 or more pairs. You can order using a paper form (available in the office) or online for convenience. Don’t miss out on these cozy, school-spirit items!

🎁 Giving Tree – Starting Next Week

We’re excited to start a new tradition this holiday season! Our Giving Tree starts next week! This special program allows teachers to request items needed for their classrooms, and parents can choose to gift these items to support our students and teachers directly. The tree will be set up in the school lobby with tags listing requested items. If you’d like to participate, simply select a tag, purchase the item, and return it to the office by the date indicated. Thank you for helping us enhance our classrooms and support our dedicated teachers!
