News
Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
This week I had the opportunity to work with district and school leaders from around the country. We discussed different models of learning that are taking place in our schools as well as taking a deep dive into what modern learning looks like. In all of this discussion, one thing that really stood out to me is the importance of our students learning to ask questions and investigate. We live in a data rich world with unthinkable volumes of data available at our fingertips. What our students need is the knowledge of how to investigate within the data available and apply things into real world situations. Part of my week also included learning more about Artificial Intelligence. I learned that AI can only work within the data available to it. The internet may be vast, but only about 30% of the knowledge of the world is contained within it. Relying on AI will limit our access to the other 70%. That statistic really made me think!
I encourage and invite you to attend your childβs parent teacher conference this week. If you donβt have one scheduled, reach out to your child's school. This is an important part of your involvement in their education.
We also approach the final day of Suicide Prevention Month, I want to remind everyone that we all have a vital role to play in suicide prevention. Being aware of the warning signs is crucial, and I encourage you to #BeThe1To offer support to those in need. Letβs keep this in focus year round.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help by calling or texting 988, by visiting 988Lifeline.org or by taking advantage of other resources available. Together, we can foster a community of care and understanding. Thank you for your commitment to mental health and well-being.

Have you seen Amie's story?
Teen suicide is a leading mental health issue, and now more than ever, it's essential to break the stigma, foster open conversations, and provide students and their families with the tools to navigate these difficult situations. Our goal is to help educators, parents, and students feel informed, prepared, and supported.
We're proud to share Amieβs Story, a powerful video series that follows the journey of Amie, a young girl who struggles with suicidal thoughts and survives a suicide attempt. Through her healing process, Amie reconnects with her family and community, demonstrating the importance of communication and support in overcoming crises.
IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.
LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.

π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

School Highlight - Assistant Superintendent Stacey Cooper
Words cannot express the amount of appreciation I hold for our teachers, principals and support staff. It truly takes a whole school community to ensure our children grow. This past week, I had the opportunity to watch one of our principals in action. As I arrived for our regular 1:1meeting, I had to chase down Mrs. Kimi Melendy. Where did I find her? In a classroom of course! Mrs. Melendy was hard at work, reading to her students about the importance of family. The book not only highlighted the assumed, traditional family, but also the entire support network that contributes to student growth through family and school. After the book, she engaged in a restorative practice activity, learning about each student name, family members and favorite foods.
This activity reminded me of the importance each one of us are on the lives of our children. The love and guidance our children receive come from all aspects of their lives. I truly enjoyed watching our Lahontan principal in action. It is apparent she loves her job, her staff and her students.

The CCHS Auto Shop is officially open for business, and students in Todd Wrightβs Automotive Technology and Diesel Technology classes are ready to begin some hands-on learning by providing a range of services including vehicle safety inspections, engine oil changes, tire mounting, balancing, and rotations, brake services, alignments, and minor repairs. Currently, they are offering services exclusively to CCHS staff members, but their goal is to expand and eventually serve the entire community.

ππ¦ Numa Elementary School
Alissa Bailey's class started their first science unit, focusing on the topic of erosion. Last week, students participated in hands-on learning, observing firsthand how wind and water can shape the landscape around them.
ππΆ E.C. Best Elementary School
Students in Heather Alvesβ second-grade class have been hard at work across all subjects. Last week, the class learned about communities and discussed many reasons why Fallon is such a great place to call home. In addition to exploring their community, students dove into their new ELA SAVVAS curriculum, immersing themselves in the world of poetry. They also worked on i-Ready math curriculum that challenged them to expand their vocabulary and rethink their approach to math.
ππΊ Lahontan Elementary School
Over the past two weeks, Kindergarten students in Erika Stanfordβs class have been engaged in an exciting science unit focused on the five senses. Students participated in a variety of activities designed to enhance their sensory awareness. While blindfolded, students described and shared their observations based on what they could hear, feel, smell, or taste.
