Weekly Wrap-Up #2: 8/24/24
Wrapping up This Week + News for the Weeks to Come
Thoughts from Your Principal, Kathy Sather
Thank you families!
Thank you families for investing your time in your children and partnering with us! We loved seeing you at our K-1 Back to School Night, Our Boo Hoo Breakfast, our 2-5 Back to School Night and more! We have loved welcoming you all back and seeing you on the playground and dropping and picking up kids. We have loved connecting with you on Class Dojo and over the phone. We loved seeing some parents at our Friday Wrap Up. It was a fast and full morning where we celebrated Garfield PRIDE which is spelled out below with the meaning associated with each letter. When we honor students at Friday Wrap Up, we are honoring them for these same qualities and more. We also learned together about how Garfield Grizzlies act at Friday Wrap-Ups, at Assemblies and how to show PRIDE even in the bathrooms. Finally we watched a short video clip from Character Strong about how kindness creates a bully free zone.
This coming Friday we will be honoring our first students in Kindergarten and First Grade.
GROWLERS OF THE WEEK: WHOLE CLASS AWARD
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR: WHOLE SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS
Safety Updates: Drop off & Pick up
We have finished one week of school + a couple days. I realized as this week started that I had NOT shared drop off and pick up expectations. Last year I shared the prior principal's, John Kleiber's video. I'd like to share it again as a reminder that drop off and pick up expectations remain primarily unchanged and then address a minor clarification. If children are being dropped off on 8th, they will be directed to walk along the edge of the playground (on the bearpaws).
The school has people on duty beginning at 7:50 am. Please do NOT drop kids off before then as there will be no adult eyes on them. For the safety of all kids, we ask that NO CARS drive through the staff parking lot. This means that from 7:50-8:05 M/T/TH/F and 8:50-9:05 W, no moving vehicles should be in that area. Parents are always free to park and walk their child all the way to the classroom door but please walk to the corner to cross the street. As construction continues in the area, traffic is more dense and we need to be extra safe with our children. Duty teachers will encourage that as well.
If you are pressed for time, parents have the option of a "Hug and Go" space on 8th street (near the grass of the playground). If you choose to hug your child there at your car, our duty teacher will direct them to the bearpaws to safely access our building. Walk them in or Hug and Go. The choice is yours. Please take a couple minutes to review the safety video created by Mr. Kleiber linked here. He did an excellent job identifying WHY we want to be considerate during drop off and pick up.
Please ensure that your child crosses the street safely at designated corners and in appropriate walkways as the traffic around our school is much denser around our school due to the construction work on Taft and around the area.
