October 2024 Newsletter
A Message from our Principal, Mrs. Ford
As October unfolds and the days grow shorter, we witness the vibrant transition from summer to fall—a time of growth, change, and new beginnings. Just as the leaves begin to turn, our students at H.E. Dummer School are blossoming with fresh ideas and newfound knowledge. Each day, they explore new concepts, develop essential skills, and embrace the excitement of learning. As the seasons shift, we celebrate the progress of our children, who continue to grow not only academically but also in character and curiosity. Here's to a season filled with learning, discovery, and transformation!
A Note from the Nurse
Flu season is around the corner! Protect yourself and your family this season with an annual flu vaccine for everyone who is 6 months and older. Seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Visit www.flu.gov or talk to your healthcare provider for more information.
Some tips from the American Safety Council for a safe and fun Halloween:
Stay in groups
Costumes should be well-fitting and flame resistant
Always test makeup so it doesn’t irritate skin
Remember to look both ways before crossing the street
Examine all treats before eating
Stay on the sidewalk
Avoid dark houses
Flashlights and glow sticks for visibility
Enjoy with caution!
Fantastic Fourth Grade
Fourth grade has done a nice job of transitioning from third grade to a whole new building, teachers, classmates, and principal. It is a lot to take in the first month of school. We are continuing to practice routines, procedures, and adjusting to all the new things!
We have wrapped up the first half of our reading unit on scientists, and how they gather information on various topics. Our new focus is on using information presented in different formats to understand a topic. We are reading about skeletons, muscles, joints, and how they all work together. Our skill practice has been on point of view, main idea, text structure, and vocabulary.
Our writing is focused on informational writing. We have created guides on how to save sea turtles, essays on places to see in Seoul, Korea, and will soon be researching an animal of choice.
Math had us on our toes as we reviewed place value, adding, subtracting, and now we are in the middle of our multiplication unit.
We completed our first science unit on the Human Body and have moved onto learning about the Constitution and branches of government for social studies.
Our days are busy and filled with learning! Please continue to check your child’s planner and Google classroom to ensure that homework is completed. We appreciate your help with this so much!
Fabulous Fifth Graders are Rock Stars!
As the month of October approaches, it is exciting to see how much our fifth graders have learned in a short period of time. At the beginning of each school year, students navigate new routines, responsibilities, behaviors, social and emotional needs, and trying hard to follow the Golden Rule (treat others the way you want to be treated). These tasks can be challenging but with continued support at school and home, they can be achieved.
Academically, what have we learned and where are we going?
In reading/writing, our first unit focuses on “Depending on Each Other”. Fifth graders have completed their first novel, The Night of the Spadefoot Toad along with a few shorter stories. Some skills students will continue to focus on are: making inferences, comparing & contrasting, determining author’s purpose, and the theme of each story. In writing, fifth graders have sharpened their writing and grammar skills by working on narratives. They will continue to practice various grammar skills as they plan, expand, and edit their future research project.
In math, students built on their prior knowledge of place value, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of whole numbers. They applied these concepts to larger numbers and numbers containing decimals. Students will dive into division of whole numbers soon. Please encourage your child to practice their basic math facts (addition/subtraction/multiplication/division) daily. Faster recall will help your child to be more confident in future lesson. For example, If a student has difficulty recalling multiplication facts, future lessons in division and fractions can become very frustrating.
In science, our first unit is “Web of Life”. Students have learned about food chains/webs, what plants eat, the role fungi play in decomposing dead materials, and created a mold terrarium to investigate the factors affecting decomposition. Moving forward, students will discover what happens in unbalanced ecosystems. How can this alter our environment?
To close the month of September, fifth graders enjoyed a walking trip to Memorial Park where they were able to play and enjoy the beautiful weather. This was the first of six behavior incentive celebrations. The purpose is to recognize positive choices our students have made during the first half of this trimester. If a student was not able to participate in part of the first celebration, they are given a new opportunity to earn future celebrations. Mistakes will happen and are part of the learning process. As a team, parents and educators, our primary goal is to help our children/students learn, grow, and become good citizens. We truly appreciate your continued support and teamwork.
Happy Fall from all of the fifth grade staff at H.E.D.
Monthly Music Notes
Hello, Dummer Families! I’m Mrs. Wehrli, and I’m thrilled to be at Dummer getting to know all our wonderful students. We’ve been busy in music class exploring the works of composer Antonin Dvořák and now celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about various composers and musicians. Our students have been experimenting with rhythms using boomwhackers, rhythm sticks, rhythm cups, and body percussion. The 5th graders have also been preparing for band by learning about woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Instrument Selection Night was a huge success, with 58 students signing up for band, and we’re excited to welcome even more if you missed it. Looking forward to a fantastic year in music!
Picture Retakes
If your student missed picture day or you would like them to have their picture taken again, picture retake day is October 16th.
