Days out at Bewerley Park
Year 3 Brave the Rain!
On Monday, Year 3 went exploring with the Bewerley Park team. They absolutely loved their day of adventure, despite the weather! In the morning, they traversed the rocks at Brimham, working together to solve problems and challenges. In the afternoon, they learned how to canoe in teams of five. The children loved being on the water and worked brilliantly to encourage each other. Well done Year 3!
Year 4's Adventures
On Tuesday, Year 4 had a wonderful day at Bewerley Park. The children spent time at Brimham Rocks where they climbed many rocks and crawled through small spaces. A particular favourite was looking at the 'watch dog' rock, that has a silhouette of a sleeping dog. After a fun-filled morning at Brimham, the children went to a lake for a canoeing session. The children connected two canoes together and paddled around the lake. They were in charge of directing their own group and working as a team. The children also played a game where they saw which team could collect the most floating objects in a given time, it was great fun!
European Day of Languages
It was fabulous to see such bright classes on Thursday, with everyone dressed in the colours of the selected European flags. Special activities happened throughout the day to help the children learn about and appreciate our continent.
In Year 3, the children used the opportunity to learn about European countries. Firstly, they located countries using the atlases. They shared their own experiences of visiting countries in Europe and where they had family links. They then used the computers to research facts about European countries to share with the class. They found some fascinating information and used their own interests to direct their own searches. The children learned how to say hello in five languages and sang songs in French.
Year 4 looked at the countries that make up Scandinavia: Sweden, Norway and Denmark. They used the iPads to research a country of their choice and find information such as how to say hello! The children noticed that the flags were very similar except for the colours, and this was because they all sported the 'Nordic flag'. Later in the day, the children looked at and recreated the work of two famous artists. Hilma Af Klint, a Swedish abstract artist, whose work focuses on the use of shapes and lines and Edvard Munch, the Norwegian artist well known for his famous painting 'The Scream'.
Sports Captains
This week, we selected our Sports Captains for the year. Children from across the school gathered together in their houses – Tigers, Sharks and Dragons – to listen to some rousing speeches from the would-be captains. They then voted for their favourite speeches and appointed a Captain and Vice-Captain for each house to lead them through the range of house sporting events throughout the year.
Congratulations to our captains: Scarlett, Charlotte, Evie, Ollie, Dominic and Robson
And our vice captains: Alfie, Ramsay, Owethu, Mia, Evelyn and Charlotte
School Lunch Thursday 3rd October
Please remember there is a menu change on Thursday. the kitchen will be serving a ‘U.S. Diner’ themed meal of chicken nuggets and ‘sides’ followed by cupcakes. There will be a vegetarian alternative of Quorn nuggets.
The funding for the free Reception and KS1 meals is provided by the Department for Education. The amount we receive is based on the average take up on three days, this year Thursday 3rd October, Thursday 16th January and Thursday 15th May. We are sure you will all understand that we would like maximum take up on those three days as it will affect our funding. We think you’ll agree that the meal above should prove popular with most children and hope that as many as possible will take school dinner on that day. If your Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 child will still be bringing a packed lunch to school, we hope to offer them at least a taste of the school meal e.g. the cupcake or some nuggets. KS2 children will also be served this change to the menu.
Nursery - Hugo for being a thoughtful and helpful member of our class.
Reception - Monty for working hard to complete our 'Star Challenges' to the best of his ability. He has produced some amazing, realistic paintings of fruit.
Year 1 - Lexi for always showing excellent listening and attention skills during our carpet sessions. You are an excellent role model to others!
Year 2 - Beatrix for her fantastic effort in English. Beatrix has been a leading voice in our class discussions this week. She has had the confidence to share her ideas with others, whilst listening to their ideas too. She's also applied these ideas into her writing, making it detailed and engaging.
Year 3 - Natasza for showing resilience on our canoeing experience, although she was unsure at first, she persevered and loved it!
Year 4 - Dylan for fabulous effort on European Day of Languages with your 'scream' painting and for being a great team player at Bewerley Park.
Year 5 - Sammy for his enthusiasm and resilience in all of his learning, particularly maths. Well done Sammy!
Year 6 - Piers for showing readiness to learn and for putting in 100% effort in maths and English lessons.
Congratulations to all our Stars of the Week!
Information Sharing
Harvest
Please join us for our Harvest Festival led by Year 4 which will take place at the Cathedral on Wednesday 2nd October at 1.30pm. Once again, we are asking for Harvest donations for the Community House food bank. All donations of dried goods, tinned food, long life milk and toiletries are welcome (no fresh or frozen food please), but the food bank is currently short of the following items: toothbrushes, hand wash, shampoo, conditioner, washing up liquid and deodorant. Please bring donations into school on Wednesday morning. Year 5 will be in Lindisfarne that day, so may bring donations into school on Monday or Tuesday instead. Many thanks in advance for your generosity.
Young Voices
This year, we are lucky to have secured 40 places at the Young Voices concert in Sheffield in January. In the past, we have planned to attend the concert every two years. However, as it is Mrs Walsh’s favourite day of the year (!), we are going to aim to take part each year where there is a demand, and places will be open to pupils in Years 4-6. Over 60 pupils attended the taster session at lunchtime yesterday and made a phenomenal sound! Letters will be sent out next week to all who attended the taster session and pupils will then have time to consider whether they would like to take part in the concert itself and return the reply slips. If there are more pupils wishing to take part than the forty places we have, names will be drawn to give everybody an equal chance. Initially, Young Voices will run as a lunchtime club but may move to after school nearer the time. Pupils who do not wish or are unable to attend the concert itself may still come along to the rehearsals, as we hope the choir will perform in school for pupils and parents throughout the year too.
