Apprenticeship Students are Building a House
Students are "demonstrating their knowledge of hand and power tools, blueprint reading, math skills, and teamwork by framing an 8-foot house in the classroom," said Mr. Freeze, WHS Apprenticeship Maryland Program instructor. Students began this project by completing a scale model, pictured on the left. Community partners will assist students with the plumbing and electrical work.
Students are also acquiring knowledge through field trips and hands-on presentations. On Feb. 14th., students took part in the Engineers Week - ASPE Plumbing System Design field trip. The trip offered hands-on experiences and opportunities to learn from experts in the field. Students are also increasing their knowledge by taking a Reading Blueprints class at the Community College of Baltimore County, (CCBC). Experts can also be found in our classrooms as more of our students take part in paid apprenticeship programs.
Jonathan, a current senior working at Local 24, has shared his work experiences. Jonathan attends class at the JATC Union and works for a contractor every day he does not attend classes at Woodlawn. Jonathan completed the Interim Credentials Program with the union and currently earns over $26/hr while working for his employer on his off days.
Bryan, junior, a current member of the class, and aspiring plumber, has been working as an apprentice with a licensed plumber for years. His experience will be helpful as students learn to install the plumbing in the structure. All 30 Apprenticeship Maryland students are OSHA 10 certified. If you or your company is interested in partnering with our program, contact Kimberley Simms, kharrissimms@bcps.org.
The Woodlawn Community Fair is a celebration of student achievement in the arts and sciences at our community public schools. The event highlights college and career pathways with alumni art demonstrations, live performances from student musicians, and capstone projects from students participating in education, science, medical, culinary, and engineering studies. This annual event will be held at Woodlawn High School on April 9th, 2025 from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM.
