Invitation to Complete the 5 Essentials Parent Survey
Dear Washington Families,
The Illinois 5Essentials school climate survey for parents is now open! I am pleased to invite all parents to participate and would like to encourage you to share your thoughts. The survey should take about 20 minutes or less to complete.
The survey focuses on the five “essential” areas that research has shown are key components for school success: Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, Involved Families, Supportive Environment, and Ambitious Instruction.
Your participation will help us understand the conditions at our school and guide improvements. Your identity and individual survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. The 5Essentials Survey is sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and was developed in collaboration with the University of Chicago.
Three helpful tips before you enter the survey:
Please focus on your experiences during the current school year.
Take care to select the correct school and community (you’d be surprised how many schools in Illinois have the same name)!
If you have a student at more than one school, we invite you to complete a survey for each location.
Please visit this link to begin: https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/
The survey will close on March 31, 2025.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and helping to improve the environment for student success at Washington!
Best,
Angie

Uncle Pete's Lunches - Thank You Washington!
Thank you to the generous Washington School Community for your support of our Uncle Pete's Sack Lunch Collection last week! The threat of rain didn’t stop the enthusiastic students of Washington from reaching out to those in need. Many of the bags were decorated which added a real personal touch. We collected over 610 lunches that were shared with individuals and families at:
· Covenant House, 2934 West Lake, serving homeless youth between ages 18 to 24
· St. Sylvester Food Pantry, 2157 N Humboldt, serving the needs of the surrounding community.
· Franciscan Outreach, 2715 W Harrison, an overnight shelter, offering food and support services for homeless men and women.
· St. Stanislaus Kostka Soup Kitchen, 1351 W Evergreen, serving meals daily to the needy.
· Deborah’s Place, 2822 W Jackson, working to break the cycle of homelessness for women providing housing and comprehensive services.
Thank you to everyone who participated by helping spread the word, bringing a lunch, running home to grab a lunch left on the counter, and helping collect the lunches before school. Thank you to the Washington teachers and staff for their support. Every contribution matters and we’ve shown our children there are many ways to truly care about our neighbors in need.
Special thanks to the Washington student council and Ms. Schlender and Ms. Bovino who helped get the word out and build excitement and collect lunches this morning.
