We hope you're doing well and that your child is settling into the school year nicely. I wanted to take a moment to focus on something that's incredibly important to your child’s success in school—regular attendance.

Why Attendance Really Matters: Every day your child is in school is a day they’re learning something new, building on what they already know, and growing into the amazing person they’re meant to be. Missing just a couple of days each month might not seem like much, but it can really add up. Before you know it, they could be behind, struggling to catch up, and we definitely don’t want that for any of our kids.

Starting Early is Key: If your child is in the early grades, showing up every day is even more crucial. Those early years lay the foundation for everything that comes later. Kids who miss too much school early on often have a hard time with reading and other skills, and that can lead to bigger problems down the road.

How You Can Make a Difference:

• Create a Routine: I know life can get hectic, but setting a consistent bedtime and morning routine can make a world of difference. It helps make getting to school on time easier for everyone.
• Let’s Stay in Touch: If something’s going on that’s making it hard for your child to get to school, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help, whether it’s figuring out transportation or dealing with health concerns.
• Talk About School: Remind your child why school matters—how it’s not just about learning facts, but about discovering who they are and what they want to do in life.

Your involvement is a huge part of your child’s success. By helping them be here every day, you’re setting them up to achieve their best—and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Nebraska SMART, operated by the Nebraska State Colleges, employs teacher education candidates attending Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State Colleges as Tutors to provide free online tutoring services for K-12 students across rural Nebraska. Tutoring takes place through an online platform with audio and video where students and Tutors can use a shared whiteboard. Below are links to Nebraska SMARTS website, Facebook, Instagram, and X.

During guidance class, we have been engaging in activities aimed at fostering stronger connections among students. Additionally, we have been exploring Homer’s core values, particularly what it means to be responsible, respectful, and safe. After Labor Day, all grade levels will focus on safety reviews. It is essential for our students to feel secure when they come to school. The drills we plan to conduct with your child will include fire, tornado, and lockdown procedures. Our staff is mindful about minimizing any potential stress or anxiety during these drills and emphasizes that they are implemented to ensure our safety. We encourage you to have similar discussions at home. Taking the time to demonstrate where your child should go during a fire or tornado can be beneficial in providing reassurance.
