Shark Tales Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: May 24, 2024
PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Happy Friday, Sheiko Sharks!
We are so excited for all of the upcoming end-of-the-year activities! We can't thank you enough for all of your support with Field Day on June 5th, special projects, and end-of-the-year parties. We are also super excited to have our Piston's assembly on June 7th. They are bringing their Extreme Team and their mascot, "Hooper" all thanks to your support of buying Piston's tickets back in March and the generosity of the Detroit Pistons.
Our "Big Announcement" this week is that our NWEA testing is now complete, except for make-ups. The students have made tremendous growth, and we know you will celebrate their success! Please encourage your student(s) to finish this year strong, including reading for 20-30 minutes every night - even in the summer!
Thank you for all you do!
Gooooooooooooooo Sheiko Sharks!

ATTENTION 4TH GRADERS
As we look ahead to the fall of 2024, we are excited to continue the longstanding tradition that 5th graders have the opportunity to become "safeties" as a leadership opportunity. These 5th grade "Laker Leaders" will be expected to lead the school in one (or more) ways. Current 4th grade students must complete the appropriate Google Form below by May 31, 2024 (for their 2024-2025 building) to be considered. Students should be sure to be signed in to their school account when they complete the form.

IMPORTANT DISMISSAL INFORMATION
We are asking all families to use the car line. We have had some close calls with cars squeezing in between buses, and could not get the ambulance into the parking lot when needed, so we want to be sure that the bus loop is clear for safety reasons.
Thank you for your support!

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Weekly SEL Family Activity:
On your own, create a list of 10 or 12 items you want kids to find. Note that this can be done inside or outside. For example, if outside, you might want them to find a plant, a pine cone, something blue, and something bumpy. If inside you might want them to find something yellow, something in the shape of a square, and something that makes noise. Give kids time to find these items and have them write them down on a piece of paper to document them.
FRIENDLY REMINDERS
Spring is upon us and students should be prepared for warmer/wetter weather. Please have your student bring extra clothes (pants & socks) to keep in their locker.
Please label everything. It will help eliminate the need for a Lost & Found table.
We are asking that students leave their smart watches at home. They have proven to be a huge distraction to teaching and learning. Students may have phones (but totally not necessary!) as long as they are powered down and in their backpacks. Students will have one reminder to put them away. Otherwise, these items will be turned into the office for parent pick up if they are out.Thank you for your support in this matter!
SICK POLICY INFORMATION
To protect all children from communicable illnesses, students infected with certain diseases are not allowed to come to school while they are contagious. Students should be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please call our Safeline (248-865-6372) if your child will be absent from school. We also have a masking station at the front of the building in which students are welcome to help themselves. For more information regarding the sick policy, please see the attached document.
