Rigler Family Bulletin
February 23, 2025

Hard to believe with the warmer weather this week that just last week we had SNOW! It was wonderful to have students back in the building after last week's unexpected long weekend and to hear their stories of time away. This week, we continued our Kindness Week, Kinder students displayed their arcades and 1st Graders created robots as culminating projects of their learning within Science and Literacy Units.
We look forward to welcoming as many of you as are able to join us on Thursday night from 5-7 p.m. to join in our schoolwide celebration of Black Brilliance. All are welcome and encouraged to come!
At our event, families will see students' learning showcased throughout the halls about some of the many ways Black people have contributed and continue to do so through arts, technology, sociopolitical and environmental movements.
A few examples of what you will see include:
- Art inspired by Black Artists such as Alma Thomas, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Diedrick Brackens and Charles McGee.
- Biographies of Portland community members, past and present, such as Dr. DeNorval Unthank and Renée Spalding
- Inventors, such as Lonnie Johnson and Madam CJ Walker
There will be group activities throughout the building (more information below) and all families are invited to enjoy a community meal together. The event will close with student performances in the auditorium. All families are welcome; we do hope you can join us!

Safety Procedures Review
This is to review two important safety procedures. The goal of these procedures is to keep students safe, make sure they are picked up only by people authorized by their parents/guardians, and help office staff collect a record of who took the child out of the building. Additionally, our current political context has increased our need to make sure all visitors who enter the building do so through the designated area (main doors at the front of the building) where we have cameras and monitoring equipment. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
- If you want to take your child home directly after a school program, such as this week's Success Assemblies, but before the end of the school day, we ask you follow our safety procedures. This means your child will return to their classroom, you will go to the front office, request that our office assistants call for your child, sign them out in the main office, wait for them in, or right outside, the office, and exit the building through the front, main double doors.
- End of day dismissal expectations reminder: Our staff sends students per the agreed upon plan with families for after-school dismissal (either to the bus, after-school care, SUN or family pick-up from their classroom teacher's line at the back of the school at 2:30 p.m.
On any day when you need to make a change in this plan, please notify the office or your child's classroom teacher before 2:00 p.m. The last 30 minutes of the day is a busy time and we need to be able to communicate changes with all school caregivers. We do this for the safety of our students to ensure they are going the right place at the end of each day. Please reach out with any questions.

Come ready to honor and celebrate Black leaders, past and present, as we dance in the gymnasium to jams through the decades, create quilt squares in the art room, learn about authors and jazz artists and vote on classroom bulletin boards! The class with the most votes will win a pizza party!
Also, if you’re willing and able, we need a few more volunteers for the event to help make it an unforgettable night. Sign up here! Thank you and see you Thursday!
Inviting Families to Offer Perspective and Further Improve Rigler School
Fidelity of Implementation Tool Assessment
Our school will soon participate in a district-wide opportunity for reflection called the Fidelity of Implementation Tool (FIT) Assessment. The FIT is a tool that measures the extent to which a school implements many of the systems and practices that have been identified as critical to equitable and inclusive schools that ensure high levels of learning for all students.
During the FIT, two support staff from the district will spend the day with us, talking to a variety of people in the school community to get an understanding of our practices. Family and community members are invited to participate in a conversation with the district staff in order to respond to predetermined questions that are asked as part of the assessment. If you would like to join us, please call (503) 916-6451, email (cbancrof@pps.net) or connect with Principal Cinnamon Bancroft in person.
We will use the data we collect from this process to inform our School Continuous Improvement Plan and other work at the building level. The district will look at district-wide data to highlight areas for further intentional support.
