Notes from the Family Ambassador
It's conference time again!
Conference days:
- Tuesday, February 4th from 3:45 to 7:30
- Thursday, February 13th from 3:45 to 7:30
Conferences are an essential opportunity for parents and teachers to come together to discuss student progress, share valuable insights, and collaborate on how to best support the student's learning and development. Your participation ensures that we are all aligned in helping your student succeed.
Before the conference
- Ask your child how they feel about school.
- Tell your child that you and the teacher are meeting to help them.
- Make a list of topics that you want to talk about with the teacher.
- Prepare a list of questions such as:
- 1. What is my child's strongest and weakest subjects?
2. Does my child participate in class?
3. Does my child seem happy at school?
4. What can I do at home to help?
During the conference
- Be on time (or early) for the meeting.
- End the meeting on time. Other guardians will probably have a conference after yours.
- Stay calm during the conference.
- Ask the most important questions first.
- Ask your child's teacher for ways that you can help your child at home.
- Thank the teacher.
After the conference
- Keep in touch with the teacher during the school year. Ask for emails or best ways to reach them to talk about your student.
Thank you for your continued support in your student's education!
We love to learn. Go get 'em, Gators!

School Counselor Update
One common theme we hear from teachers in the classroom today is that their students are lacking grit. Over the next several weeks, I will explore what grit is, how we can cultivate more of it in our students both at school and at home and share activities and books that families can use to help foster this valuable trait.
What is GRIT?
Grit is a personality trait that describes someone who is determined and persevering, especially when working towards long-term goals. People with grit are able to maintain their interest and effort over time, even when faced with challenges or setbacks, they don't give up.
9 Activities to build GRIT/RESILIENCE for Children
Discuss their dreams and goals: Talk about the steps that would be required in order for your students to reach their goals. Encourage them to create a dream board and/or bucket list.
Conduct Grit interviews: Have your students interview grandparents, neighbors, or other acquaintances who have worked hard towards a goal.
Share stories of gritty famous people: Have students study famous people (and their failures) like Michael Jordan or J.K. Rowling. These examples will show them that perseverance through failure can lead to great success.
Teach about grit through nature: Read the Tupac Shakur poem “The Rose that Grew from Concrete”. Then discuss what represents the “concrete” in their life. What are the obstacles? Next, discuss how your students can “break through concrete” like the rose. What can they do to overcome obstacles and reach their dreams?
Teach about Grit through literature: Read classic stories of perseverance like The Little Engine that Could or Jill Neimark’s The Hugging Tree. Help your students form connections to their own life. Talk about their challenges, responses to failures, and how to live with grit.
Ask, “What’s the hard part?”: When students feel discouraged or tempted to give up, ask them, “what is the hard part?” After you and the student identify the challenge, ask the student what they could do to fix or overcome the “hard part”.
Share your passions: Show your students your excitement about activities outside of working/school. Demonstrate how you devote time to these passions.
Together we can help our students develop more grit and resilience for the future.
Safety & Security
With the warmer weather this week, please remember to look for kids in the parking lot when dropping off. Do not pass cars in the pick/up drop/off lane.
Following traffic patterns in the Gables Elementary parking lot is crucial for ensuring the safety of students, I know we all have places to be in the morning, but the safety of the students should come first. When everyone follows the rules, it creates an organized environment where students and parents can coexist safely, making the parking lot a safer place for everyone involved. Here is a reminder of our traffic patterns for both morning and afternoon parent pick up. Please note you should NEVER drop off children on Becket Avenue, this is for busses ONLY.

New Library Branch Coming to Northwest Columbus
From Pastures To Pages, The Case Road Library Branch Is On The Way
Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) is adding a brand-new library to its lineup, bringing its total number of branches to 24. The new Case Road Branch will serve the city’s northwest side, marking a significant expansion into a previously underserved area.
The branch will be located on West Case Road, across from The Ohio State University’s airport, on a parcel of land informally known as the “sheep farm.” The land, purchased by the City of Columbus from OSU in 2019, will also be home to a planned city park. This collaboration with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department promises to bring both literary and outdoor experiences to the community.
