Hobby MS Teachers of the Year
From the Magnet School Director
Teachers Of The Year
I want to start this week by recognizing two of our amazing teachers here at Hobby Health Science Magnet. Please help me congratulate Ms. Canales and Mrs. Jackson for being named as our Teacher of the Year and New Teacher of the Year! We are truly blessed to have them on our team!
It has been a very busy week around here and February is just getting started. 7th grade teachers planned the next Project Based Learning collaboration and students have been hard at work on the next design challenges in Science in both grade levels. Feb 13th we will have our first HOSA competition afterschool. Families are welcome to attend to support the competitors and then stay after for Hobby’s I Heart Learning evening of fun!
The students are engaged in activities all over campus as the basketball teams wrap up their successful seasons and tennis continues with their matches. We want to recognize our many thespians as they compete this weekend in Theater OAP. I love how our students manage all of their interests and still stay focused on their academics. We have had many out due to the flu so please help them stay organized as they catch up on course work. Doctor and parent notes can be sent to victoria.denton@nisd.net.
7th Graders will go to St. Phillips on Monday. Please remind them to bring lunch if they didn’t order one from the cafeteria and to wear purple . We also expect them to have their ID’s on.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We offered seats to the (25-26) incoming 6th grade class at Hobby Health Science this past week and we will begin our transition activities to welcome them to our Hawk family. I will be looking for a few volunteers for our upcoming Cluster events. It works best if they can volunteer if it is near where you live to make it easier on you. If these locations happen to be your home school or close to home please email me if they can help.

Hobby MS is administering the TELPAS (Texas Language and Proficiency Assessment System) that measures English reading, listening, speaking and writing ability according to a language proficiency continuum based on the stages of language development of second language learners. All students identified as Emergent Bilinguals/English Learners in Grades K-12, including those who have declined bilingual or ESL services, are required to participate in TELPAS.
MAP Growth results for Reading and Math, along with student observations, had been used for targeted tutoring recommendations! ALL core teachers have selected specific students to participate in targeted tutoring. Please view your email or inquire with your child's teacher if you are concerned about their academic progress. Targeted tutoring began this week and Hobby Science led the charge with the best attendance for tutoring before school!
MAP reports are going home and look like the following:

An excused absences is still considered an absence from school, but does not count towards perfect attendance since the child was not physically present. An excused absence helps towards the Compulsory Attendance Law.

Hobby Dance Department earned a prestigious Division-I rating
We are thrilled to brag about our incredible dancers! On Monday, February 3rd, the Hobby Dance Department earned a prestigious Division-I rating at the Texas Dance Educators Association (TDEA) D.E.A.L. Assessment. This A+ rating is a testament to the exceptional talent and skill of our students.
During the assessment, our dancers had just 20 minutes to learn choreography on the spot, which included basic ballet technique and dance improvisation. They then performed in front of state adjudicators, who awarded both students and educator, the Division-I score for our overall performance.
This marks the third consecutive year that Hobby Dance has earned a Division-I rating, and we are incredibly proud to continue this tradition of excellence!

IMPORTANT ATHLETIC INFORMATION
If your child is interested in trying out for a sport, or is enrolled in 7th or 8th grade athletics, there is mandatory paperwork that must be completed before they can be eligible to participate.
An athlete cannot try out for a sport before completing ALL UIL paperwork found on the parent portal. (link below)
STUDENTS NEW TO ATHLETICS:
All incoming students who did not have a medical physical last year MUST complete a medical physical and give a copy to the head coach on campus. The physical form can be printed from the parent portal. The medical history form must be completed online. Print the completed medical history and the physical form and take both of those papers with you to the doctor when you get your physical. Technology For Students
Chromebook Responsibility
As we begin a new school year, we are excited to continue integrating technology into our classrooms with the use of Chromebooks. The Chromebooks are powerful tools that enhance learning, and they also come with responsibilities. Outlined below are the expectations for Chromebook use to ensure a safe and productive learning environment for all students at Hobby Middle School
Chromebook Expectations
1. Academic Use: Chromebooks are to be used primarily for educational purposes.
2. Daily Care and Maintenance: Students are required to bring their Chromebooks and chargers to school each day fully charged and ready to use. Devices should be stored safely in their backpacks when not in use. Students should avoid eating or drinking near their Chromebooks to prevent accidental damage. Decorations and stickers are not allowed to be added to the Chromebooks.
3. Digital Citizenship: We emphasize the importance of responsible online behavior. Students must adhere to the school’s acceptable use policy, which includes respecting privacy, avoiding inappropriate content, and practicing good digital etiquette.
4. Monitoring and Privacy: While the Chromebooks are provided for educational use, please be aware that the school’s IT department monitors all activity on these devices to ensure compliance with our usage policies. Our BARK alert system will alert us of misuse and the student may have their chromebook taken away.
Costs and Repairs
While the school provides Chromebooks, students and parents are responsible for maintaining the device in good working condition:
In case of theft, a replacement device may be issued only if a Police Report is filed and submitted with the campus Technology Support Specialist (TSS). Breakage and misuse of the device will result in payment from the parent or guardian:
Repair Costs:
Device replacement cost $272
Cracked Screen: $100
Missing keys: $25
Charger replacement $13
If a Chromebook is damaged or not working properly, students should report it immediately to their TSS, teacher, or the office as soon as possible.
