We are Proud to Introduce a New Feature:
"A Look Back"
On December 19, 2023, Mr. Cherkasky, BASH Telecom Teacher, stepped to the podium at the BASD Board of School Directors' Meeting. Over the course of the next 25 minutes, he shared just a glimpse into our high school's rich history and the history of our district flag. He captivated the audience with his knowledge of and passion for BASH. After hearing him speak, we couldn't help but ask him to share more of his insights into our history with a broader audience - leading to this new feature.
Mr. Cherkasky, Thank you for investing your time and energy into getting to know about our district, preserving our past, and sharing your knowledge. We can't wait to learn more!

"A Look Back"
Written by Mr. Cherkasky, BASH Telecom Teacher and "District Historian"
Fifty years ago, Boyertown Junior High East Center opened for its first full school year. Construction of the building began in June of 1972 and was completed in January of 1974 for a total cost of 5.5 million dollars. The original enrollment was 900 7th through 9th grade students who lived in the eastern half of the Boyertown Area School District.
The school was designed using the “open space” concept which was popular in the 1970s. It was divided into four areas, one for each of the major subjects. In the mathematics, social studies, and language areas, large open classrooms were designed to house five classes with no dividing walls. In the science department, four science classrooms surrounded the planetarium. The school also featured a reading pit, a dining room with round tables, and a gymnasium which was 50 percent larger than the high school gymnasium at that time.
It was soon determined that the open concept was not conducive to learning, so temporary barriers were installed in the large open classrooms to allow for more traditional learning. In 2003, an extensive 20-million dollar renovation to the building began which was completed in 2006. The renovation added 27,000 square feet to the building and properly divided the large instruction areas into individual classrooms. The project also enhanced the security in the building and added new lighting, windows, flooring, and HVAC.
In 2017, the building transitioned to a middle school after the 9th grade moved to the high school and the 6th grade moved up from the elementary schools. Boyertown Middle School East currently has an enrollment of 840 students and is under the direction of Dr. Andrew Maoury, Principal and Mr. Eric Marsch, Assistant Principal.
Here is the School Board presentation that led us to "A Look Back."

CES Shines a Light on Executive Functioning Skills in '24-'25
Submitted by Mrs. Mason, CES Principal
This year, Colebrookdale Elementary School is starting an initiative to build students' executive functioning skills. Executive functioning skills are a set of mental skills that help us get things done. These skills help us plan, initiate actions, organize our time, remember information, and manage multi-step tasks.
For the months of August and September, students are focusing on "attention." Second grade students in Mrs. Houp's class learned that our attention is like a beam from a flashlight and can only focus on one thing at a time. They will be practicing directing and redirecting their "flashlights" to what's important this year. Her students made flashlights to reenforce this understanding. Where is your flashlight shining?

It's Tuesday. Let's Talk...
Mr. Stoudt, our Acting Superintendent, believes that it is important to be visible in our schools and to our community. He had already proposed a video feature in Let's Talk Tuesdays, when the information about the CES flashlight lesson was submitted to him and other members of our team.
The next thing we knew...it was lights...camera...VIDEO! We hope you enjoy our first attempt at this new format as we enjoyed making it!

'23-'24 TSA Team Members Participate in Nationals
Written by Mr. Pennington, BASH TSA Advisor
I am proud to share the results of our Boyertown High School Chapter as they traveled to Orlando, FL, to compete against over 9000 kids from 48 states and 7 other countries! Sixteen Boyertown high school students drove an 18-hour journey from Boyertown to Orlando as a part of our TSA National Conference. Accompanied by chaperones Keith Kopicki and Mackenzie Pope, the kids competed for 5 days, and several made the final top 15 at the national conference. The chapter started the week well, winning several awards, including the American Cancer Society Purple Award for the highest donation in the world by an individual chapter of TSA. Furthermore, many Boyertown students won the TSA Gold Achievement Award, which is given to students who exemplify service, volunteerism, leadership, and proficiency in TSA. Those students included: Mckenna Smith, Aly Hadfield, Eryn Drobins, Abby Johnstin, Allyson Bosler, Thomas Huber, and Grace Gibbons.
Boyertown continued the week strong on the way to the final awards ceremony at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando. The 2024 Boyertown students achieved something that has never been done before, finishing the conference with two first-place finishers!
Congratulations to McKenna Smith for her first-place victory in Architectural CAD and to Milly Liang for her first-place finish in Promotional Design.
Here is a full list of the top 10 finishers at Nationals for Boyertown High School.

It is a huge honor and rare for students to finish in the Top 10 at Nationals; the competition is fierce. Each event boasts around 100 entries from every state in the country and even other countries, and the kids went up against a record-setting number of participants at the conference this year, which spanned 5 Universal Orlando Hotels and reached nearly 10,000 students!

BASD Enters TMobile's Friday Night 5G Lights Competition
T-Mobile is giving out multiple cash prizes to small-town football programs. The “Friday Night 5G Lights” will be giving out a $2 million grand prize to one lucky school. Along with $25,000 to 16 finalists, they are also giving out $5,000 to 300 schools throughout the entry period.
Rob Gronkowski, the contest spokesperson, said, “On Friday nights, all the things that divide us go away. On game day, we’re all just one team and one community to leave everything on the field and be the best we can be. We need a lot more Friday nights!”
The playing field for Friday Night 5G Lights is wide open to high schools in U.S. towns with a population of 150,000 or less.
Schools, students, PTA members, and the entire community can also join the fun by posting their school spirit on Instagram to increase the odds of their high school winning some extra cash for new equipment, sports gear, or transportation expenses. Anyone can represent their community and show off their school spirit.
Don’t forget to tag the school’s official Instagram handle, @tmobile, and use the hashtags #Sweepstakes and #FN5GL to ensure each entry is counted.
