Wrapping Up September
Yearbook takes home Program of Excellence Gold Award
SHS Yearbook won the Program of Excellence Gold Award for having over 60% of our student body in the yearbook three or more times AND for selling out all their copies. During the conference students got to take classes in caption writing, interviewing, photography, design and team and project management.
Picture Day Tuesday, September 26th
Students who did not get their picture taken on Sentinel Day will need to get their picture taken on Tuesday, September 26th. Students need to have a current picture of them each year for our records system, for their current year school ID/ASB card, and the yearbook.
Students will be called down over the PA system throughout the day and will receive a note at the start of the day that they need to have their picture taken.
Please don’t wear green!
Our green screen technology lets you choose your background after Picture Day, but it also makes green clothes disappear into the background. So please, don’t wear green on Picture Day!

Road Construction Notice
The I-5 Mounts Road to Steilacoom-DuPont Road Corridor Improvements projects began in
August. If you’ve driven Interstate 5 recently, chances are you’ve seen new orange
construction signs, shifted lanes and construction activity by Exit 119/Steilacoom-DuPont
Road. WSDOT wants travelers to know what is happening and the work hours they will see lane or ramp closures. The online open house will be updated throughout the life of the project.

Instructional Materials Committee
The Instructional Materials Committee makes core curriculum adoption recommendations to the School Board. SHSD is looking for parents or guardians with students in our secondary schools to serve on the Instructional Materials Committee for the 2023-2024 school year. If you have an interest in serving on this committee and are able to attend meetings in the early evening, please contact Dr. Laurie Vallieres, Director of Teaching and Learning lvallieres@steilacoom.k12.wa.us by October 3rd, 2023. Final appointment to the committee is subject to approval by the School Board.
November 7th Capital Levy Proposal
Next month, ballots will begin arriving in homes and voters in the Steilacoom Historical School District will get to decide whether to support a new capital projects levy. The levy is a substantially smaller list of projects and a lower dollar amount than the bond proposal that ran earlier this year. The levy includes:
- A new heating and ventilation system for Cherrydale and Chloe Clark
- Replacement of heating and ventilation system controls in other schools
- A new roof and other exterior improvements to prevent leaking at Steilacoom High School
- Technology system improvements districtwide
- District property
- Replacement of the high school turf field
- Traffic revisions at Cherrydale, Chloe Clark, and Saltar's Point
- Districtwide lighting and security system improvement
If the levy doesn't pass with 50% voter approval, funding will not be available for any of these critical projects.
This is a short-term levy (two years) with a tax rate that is lower than the current bond tax rate that is going away. The 2023 bond rate was $1.63 and the new levy rate that would replace it if approved would be $1.09 in 2024.
While these projects are completed, the district will re-engage with the community about larger needs that could be included in a future bond issue.
You are encouraged to get more information about the levy - on our website at https://www.steilacoom.k12.wa.us/who-we-are/departments/financial-services/shsd-2023-levy-information.
The district will hold informational webinars about the levy proposal on October 17 and November 1.
If you have questions, contact Shawn Lewis at shlewis@steilacoom.k12.wa.us

Counselor Corner
Running Start Students Update
As shared in the Running Start Contract, neither you, as a parent, or your student’s high school counselor have access to your student’s academic and attendance information at Pierce College. However, if your student fills out this form, it allows you to communicate with Pierce about your student’s academic progress at college. This form comes directly from Pierce college and addressed the Family Educational and Privacy Act (FERPA). We also highly encourage them to add you as their parent along with their assigned high school counselor as a person whom information can be released to so that we can assist students as needed. Please have your student share the passcode so that you and/or your student’s high school counselor can receive information from the college, without the passcode Pierce College will not release information.
Please reach out to your student’s counselor if you have any other questions.

If your student is not on track to graduate, Mr. Brugman will make this clear in his meeting with them, and will be following up with the family through Parentsquare by October 2.
Closed Campus and Running Start
Please remember that students should only be on campus if they are in a scheduled SHS class.
