Rāmere Friday 2nd September Mahuru 2022 (T3: W6 of 10)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
Welcome to spring. We are enjoying the warmer and slightly longer days. Updates and developments to share with you this week include the following...
- Happy Father's Day: To all our dads out there - have a great Father's Day on Sunday! We appreciate your input and support of our school in so many ways.
- Maximising Learning Time: Time is a precious resource and we have been looking at how we can use the time we have been given in a better way. There is a lot that is expected to be covered in a primary school day and getting the allocation of time right really helps. From now and into Term Four we are trialing a number of timetable adjustments related to: library times (more towards late morning and the afternoon to give a good flow in reading, writing and maths), fitness (at the discretion of the classroom teacher rather than prescribed at a set time for the whole school) and Celebration Time (moving to fortnightly in Term Four).
- Office Upgrade: We anticipate that during these up and coming holidays the administration office upgrade will occur which includes: a new storage unit for the office, new carpet, the refurbishment of one office for our Learning Support Coordinators and turning the storage room into a principal's office. We are hoping to keep the disruptions to in the holidays but there may be some days in Term Four where work is finished up.
- Whanau Picnic BBQ Helpers: We are having a whanau picnic on the last day of Term Three and are looking for around five parents to help with the barbecue. Please contact the office if you can help.
- The Dunedin Study - An Interesting and Significant Finding: The Dunedin Study is a comprehensive longitudinal (50+ years) study of a large group of people (1000+) which is regarded as one of the most important in the world. A significant finding is the role of self-control. Self-control is the most significant predictor of success in life. The study has found that from as early as two, a child’s level of self-control was evident. Over time, participants who had stronger self-management from an early age were more focused, found it easier to make friends, did better at school, had positive relationships as adults and generally made choices that helped them lead positive, successful lives. A child's maturity in relation to self-control matters and it matters a lot! Good character counts and leads to good outcomes.
- Social Media: A reminder that we do not expect any of our children to have any type of social media presence. It takes considerable maturity to navigate the 'nooks and crannies' and pitfalls of social media. Developing minds can be negatively targeted that cause unnecessary distress. Our advice is, if your child already has any social media account, that it is deleted. We prefer them to engage in a variety of activities with family members and friends, enjoying real social interactions that grow them and develop life-long friendships.
- Police Vetting: With school events where parents are coming as volunteer helpers we seek a police vet. It pays to have this all done well before the event as it can take some time to process these.
Acknowledging - Team Edendale
- Edendale Community Pool Society: This is a team of dedicated, community-minded people who give of their skills, talents and time, to operate the pool, out-of-school hours, for the benefit of the community. It is all voluntary and does take a significant commitment over the pool season in opening, testing, cleaning, maintaining and closing every day. A big thank you to them, as their community spirit benefits so many.

Our Team for this Week - Team Kea
We have thirteen cool Team Kea kids at the moment. Next term we are welcoming lots more children to Team Kea and we are looking forward to their school visits.
We are lucky to have Mrs Shepherd for a few days throughout the term as our reliever. She has been teaching us about time, traditional games and Māori. Mrs Blackmore has also been a fantastic help and support for us with our learning.
We have been learning a lot. For reading each group has been moving through the levels and working on pointing to and recognising words. For maths, we have been learning about number knowledge and addition and subtraction. During writing time, the children are working on their pencil skills, sounds and letters, and forming sentences.
- Jonty – I like writing because I can draw a good picture and write about it.
- Layton – I like writing all the numbers for maths.
During the day we have action station time. This is where the children can choose what they do. During this time the children are practising our key competencies and using their social skills and creative skills. We love this time of day and enjoy stations like Lego, marbles, puzzles, drawing table and role play at the pizza shop.
- Rouh – I like making drums out of the hedgehog blocks.
- Luke – I like Lego because I can make homes and play with the Lego people.
For DRIVE we have been learning about different types of animals and animal groups. It has been interesting learning about what different animals can do, what they eat and where they live.
A favourite learning activity for us is art. Recently we made zebras. We had to dye a colourful background, paint stripes and use our cutting skills.
- Stella – We had to paint stripes and the nose on the zebra. We painted a rainbow. It looks cool.
We are looking forward to our ice-skating, Kamahi Reserve trip and a busy and fun end of year!

Character Values Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L): Term Three Excellence Tohungatanga
Excellence means we aim for a high standard and continuous improvement and is shown through reliability, consistency, flexibility, reflection, change, innovation, accuracy, completion, dedication, practice, effort and attitude.
Work hard, have a go and do our best.
Leave everything how we would want to find it.
Wear our uniform with pride.
This week's Principal's Values Award goes to: Leroy Orr
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kiwi
Team Kiwi’s MVP for Tohungatana - Excellence is Piper Johnstone.
Piper displays excellence in Team Kiwi in many ways. Piper knows when she arrives at school that she needs to get ready for the school day. She does all her morning tasks without needing to be reminded and she always gives her teachers a polite and friendly greeting.
Piper takes great pride in the presentation of all her school work, which is always completed to a very high standard. She works at a task from the start to the finish and always tries her best. She listens to feedback and makes changes if needed. Piper displays wonderful ‘mat manners’ and always listens attentively to whoever is speaking.
Piper understands that in the classroom it is important to put things back where they belong. Piper happily tidies our classroom at the end of an activity and is always willing to lend a hand to others.
We are lucky to have a role model like Piper in Team Kiwi! Keep up the hard work. Piper, you are a star!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kereru
Team Kereru’s MVP for Tohungatanga - Excellence is Miriam Pemberton.
Miriam is a positive student in Team Kereru. She often comes to school with a smile on her face and sometimes even has a story or two to share.
Miriam shows excellence through her book work and focus in the classroom. She tries her best in her work and will stay focused until it is completed. She often surrounds herself with peers who won’t distract her.
Art is a subject that Miriam is passionate about. You can see the amount of effort she puts into her art work to make it look presentable and completed. Keep it up Miriam!
Miriam is prepared for learning by having the correct gear with her at school. She has everything she needs at her desk.
Miriam respects our school values and will show these inside and outside of the classroom.
I can’t wait to see what the year brings for you, Miriam. Keep up the awesome mahi!
