Note from the Principal
Happy February! I hope you’re having a great start to the year and that this newsletter finds you well. This month is full of musical activities. Please join us for our many performances including Beetlejuice Jr.
As we continue with the winter season, please be mindful of weather-related school closings. In the event of inclement weather, student and staff safety is a top priority. Please stay informed through one of the many communication options from our district: school website, social media, local TV and radio, email, phone call, or text message alerts.
Finally, we greatly value your continued partnership to keep our students and school safe. For updates see our website at siouxcityschools.org or use our mobile app.

January Staff Member of the Month: Congratulations and thanks to Ms. Jaime Woodard as January staff member of the month! Ms. Woodard is a fantastic teacher and even better person! She is beyond patient with challenging students and has some of the best strategies to work through difficult concepts with students who just need extra supports. She is always very punctual and is willing to go above and beyond to make WMS a better place. She cannot be thanked enough for all she does. Ms. Woodard always goes above and beyond to support the 6th grade students, both general education and special education. She is a constant advocate for their learning needs AND is always working to help them become advocates for themselves. She never settles for just good enough and always pushes our students to work and grow to the best of their abilities. The kids love her warm and kind demeanor, but she does not let them fool themselves into being anything less than they can be. She is a vital member of our team, and I truly do not know how we could function without her. In addition, she serves on our Behavior Leadership Team for behavior.
Thanks, Jaime for making WEST, BEST!
Health / Safety / Fitness Tip: Winter Safety Tips
For February we want to emphasize the importance of home safety. There are potential hazards we want to prevent. Follow these guidelines:
- Check your heating systems.
- Clean out chimneys and fireplaces.
- Closely monitor any burning fires or candles.
- Check your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
- Remove ice and snow from walkways to prevent slips and falls.
- Keep an emergency kit in your home that includes flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, extra medicine, and baby items.
- If you lose power, your kit should also include food and water for three days for each family member, warm clothing if you have to evacuate, and toys and games for children.
- Wear layers of light and warm clothing, a wind-resistant coat, waterproof shoes, and a hat, gloves, and scarf.
- Work slowly when engaged in outdoor tasks, such as shoveling your driveway or removing snow from your car.
- Take a friend and carry a charged cell phone when participating in outdoor activities.
