A Note From Mrs. Howard...
Hello Eagle Families!
The air is crisp, leaves are falling and November is here. Can you believe it? The fall semester seems to be flying by! I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication our students and staff have shown so far.
93% of Norwich parents came to the school for parent teacher conferences! It is always a pleasure for teachers to meet with parents and share all the exciting things students are doing in the classroom! It's a great time to put our heads together to ensure all students have the best learning experience possible. If you were unable to get in touch with your child's teacher it's not too late! Please reach out at any time you have things you would like to discuss. If you have not had a chance to log in to your family access account in Skyward to view your student's first 9 weeks grades please take a minute to do so!
Vaping has become a trend that poses significant health risks to our young people. Many students may underestimate the dangers associated with e-cigarettes and vaping devices, believing them to be a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, research indicates that vaping can lead to nicotine addiction and may have harmful effects on developing brains and lungs.
As a school, we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students. To that end, we are implementing a series of educational initiatives to inform students about the risks of vaping. We believe that a strong partnership with parents is crucial in addressing this issue effectively.

NEW LUNCH ROOM CHARGING PROCEDURE
Board policy allows students and staff to charge up to $15.00. Once they have charged $15.00, the policy dictates that we provide an alternative meal (in our case, this is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich).
Each Monday parents will receive a text and email when any payor account balance is $10.00 or less.
Once your account is negative you will receive daily texts, emails and/or phone calls to make arrangements for bringing your account current, as well as a reminder to send lunches from home.
LIFE'S HOPE EVENT-NOVEMBER 14TH
We are excited to provide the Norwich Students the opportunity to be the first ever Kansas school to participate in a Life's Hope event.
What is a Life's Hope Event??
Please check out Life's Hope on Facebook and Instagram to see what it is all about!
Gift Selection Process:
All Pk-12 students will have the opportunity to select two gifts-one for themselves and one to give away. The selection process will involve a raffle ticket with each class listed, determining the order in which classes will choose gifts. For the second gift, we will reverse the order, allowing the last classes to start and proceed forward.
Management of "Wow" Gifts:
To ensure a fair distribution of gifts, Life's Hope will hold back part of the "wow" gifts. This will allow us to restock the products after each class has made their selection.
Assistance from Norwich Community & School Volunteers:
We are grateful for the support of the Norwich Fire Department and the Norwich Inter-Church Council volunteers as well as the Norwich School FCCLA & SADD Clubs.. These volunteers will be present to set up an informational table and assist with unloading, sorting and assembling on the day of the event.
We are also thankful to Debbie Hall, Lindsay Hardaway and The Daily Grind students for offering a hospitality lunch for all the hard working volunteers!
Product Resale and Trading:
The products received at this event are not available for resale or trading. This ensures that the spirit of giving is preserved.
Media Release Consent:
During enrollment parents were asked to give or not give consent to have students filmed and photographed. We will use this information to share the moments of this event on Life's Hope Facebook and Instagram pages.
We are looking forward to participating in this wonderful event. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to us.
A special thanks to Ted & Debbie Hall and Tab Turner for bringing the attention of Life's Hope personnel to our amazing students and community!!
Counselor's Corner
Spotlight on Community Resources
Let’s talk about mental health….
This is the second year our district is participating in the Mental Health Intervention Team (MHIT) Program. The main goal of this program is to host a counselor at the school building to provide therapy for our students.
Coordinating therapy for your child can be….difficult. There is a lot of paperwork and phone calls, appointments to schedule, parents have to take off work, and students have to miss class. The idea behind MHIT is simple- Instead of taking students to a therapy office, why not bring the therapist to the student?
There are still some wrinkles to work through (there’s still a lot of paperwork). But I can help families process through it, make phone calls to follow up, and answer some questions. We currently have over 50 students already set up with a therapist. I am working with another 40 students to get them started (or supported in a way that works best for them).
WHY TRY? I collect data on every student in the program. That information includes academic achievement, attendance, acting out, and emotional regulation. Here are our results from last year: Over 25% of the students improved in ALL 4 of those areas. And the vast majority improved in 2 or more areas.
Students in our program do better. Their grades go up, they act out less, make stronger connections to their peers, and they feel better about themselves. Students that feel good about themselves are more likely to believe in their own critical thinking skills, their ability to learn, and their ability to grow emotionally.
If you are interested in signing your child up, or just have more questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out: lloveland@knusd331.com.

NJH Volleyball
We are so proud of the JH volleyball team this year! Twenty-six girls in one gym all trying to get better can be hard at times but each one of the girls showed HEART through this season! We focused on becoming better volleyball players, not just winning games. Through their Hard Work, Enthusiasm, Attitude, Respect and Teamwork we saw much growth throughout the season. The C team finished their season with a 3-2 record, losing twice to a tough South Barber Team but bringing home the win against Cunningham and Pretty Prairie when the A and B teams fell short. The B team worked through multiple line-ups/positions and worked on team chemistry finishing the season with a 5-5 record. The A team’s overall record ended at 12-4. Although we fell short against South Barber at home for league play making South Barber undefeated in league with a 9-0 record, the A team beat the 9-0 South Barber team in a non-league game and beat them again in the first round of the tournament. This group of girls never gave up and left all they had on the court! Thanks for a great season ladies!

Attendance Policy
All students enrolled in the Kingman-Norwich School District between the ages of 7-17 are required to attend school on a regular basis in accordance with Kansas statutes and district attendance guidelines. Daily attendance records shall be maintained for each student and building Principals are responsible for enforcing the attendance policy. The Kingman Norwich Board of Education has approved seven (7) reasons for students to be excused from school. The reasons are as follows:
Personal illness – Up to 7 absences for personal illness will be considered excused when parents make appropriate notification to the school office. Any absences due to illness in excess of 7 days will require documentation from a doctor or other qualified medical professional;
Health-related treatment, examination, or recuperation;
Serious illness or death of a member of the family;
Obligatory religious observances;
Participation in a district-approved or school sponsored activity or course;
Absences pre-arranged by parents and approved by the principal; and
Students of active-duty military personnel may have additional excused absences at the discretion of the principal for visitations relative to leave or deployment.
An unexcused absence is one which has been classified as such by the building administration. An absence will be classified unexcused if it does not fit one of the board’s seven stated reasons for excusable absence or if the building attendance procedure is not followed by the student and the parent or legal guardian.The long-term truant student may be dropped from school enrollment once the student has not attended for 10 consecutive school days.
PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW FOR AN EXCUSED ABSENCE
When a student is absent, in order for the absence to be classified excused, the following procedure is to be used:
1. Parents or guardians are asked to phone the school by 8:30 a.m. the day of the absence informing the school’s
representative of the student’s reason for being absent.
2. If the school does not receive a call by 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence, the school makes every attempt to contact
the parents or guardians during that school day.
3. In the event that phone contact is not made during school hours that day of the absence, on the day the student returns
to school, the student should bring a written note from the parent or guardian that explains the absence.
4. When the student returns to school from being absent, other than from a school activity, the student must report to the main office for an admit slip.
5. The student will have 24 hours from the time the unexcused absence is issued to provide either written or verbal communication from the parent excusing the absence. If no communication is received within this time, the absence will remain unexcused.
