Family Newsletter
October 4, 2024
A Note From Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
Please be reminded that there is no school for students on October 10, 2024 or October 11, 2024, for Parent Teacher Conferences and Staff Professional Development, respectively.
Thank you to all of the families who joined us at Art All Night! It was a spectacular opportunity to engage as a school community.
As we shared, the Hyde-Addison ES community is collecting new blankets for those in need, as we approach this winter season. Our goal is 100 new blankets by October 25, 2024. We are off to a rather slow start, with 9 blankets. Thank you for those who have already donated! I know others are waiting for their online orders to arrive. So, thank you as well. Feel free to drop off any new blankets in one of the collection boxes or at the main office.
As a reminder, although the preference is for all families to enter and exit through the main gate, if you exit through the P Street gate for any reason, please be sure to close the gate behind you, for safety reasons.
As always, please feel free to email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov, with any school specific inquiries.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal
Hyde-Addison Elementary School
NEWS & UPDATES
New Attendance Emails and Letters Will Come from DCPS/Everyday Labs
Starting Friday, October 4, DCPS in partnership with EveryDay Labs will send mailed and electronic attendance communications to the families of students who have missed five percent or more of the school year (excused or unexcused).
Please know that the school team is not made aware of these communications when you receive them. We do not see the mailings or the texts and, as a result, may not be best situated to respond to concerns about them. Emails about attendance from the school team will be sent from hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov or the Assistant Principal (jamila.payton2@k12.dc.gov).
As of October 2nd, our school's chronic absenteeism rate stands at 12.19%. Our goal is to reduce this to 8% or lower by the end of the year, as improving attendance remains one of our top priorities.
DC CAPE Score Reports Released
This week DC CAPE score reports were sent home with students in grades 4 and 5 in backpacks. Additionally, we mailed score reports to students who no longer attend Hyde-Addison. Families can access the OSSE Family Portal for informational videos regarding their child's score using the QR access codes enclosed in the envelope.
Unity Day at Hyde-Addison
What is Unity Day?
Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2011, is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. This is a day when we can come together in one giant, ORANGE message of hope and support. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange on Wednesday, October 16th. This vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, showing support for students who have been bullied and for bullying prevention.
Penny Wars Campaign
In celebration of Unity Day and Bullying Prevention Month, Hyde-Addison is organizing a campaign to bring Unity in the Community.
How it works:
Each grade will collect pennies or other coins in their designated piggy box between 10/16-10/30. The class with the highest amount after collection will vote on their prize. All proceeds will go to a community based organization.
Attention 5th Grade Families
Hardy Middle School will be hosting several Open Houses this school year for prospective students and their families. Please mark your calendars -
SY 2024-2025 Open House Dates:

• Wednesday, January 29, 2025 from 5-7pm

Although every child develops in their own unique ways, there are some milestones that research has found to be consistent with the growth of a child.
