Kindergarten and 1st grade is November 18, 2024 at 6pm in the Gym. Theme is "Pets"
2nd and 3rd grade Febuary 24, 2025 at 6pm in the Gym Theme is "Cookies" being proud of being unique
4th grade April 14, 2025 at 6pm Theme is I Love Broadway.
Kindergarten
Students are learning how to:
use their 4 voices and Identify it when they hear it: whisper, speak, sing, and shout
identify and demonstrate fast and slow
echo movement and singing
walking in the music space and on their assigned spot
keep steady
First Grade
Here is what we are working on:
Keeping Steady
Clapping the words
Keeping steady and the words are not the same thing
Moving our body to music
Singing voices and matching pitch
Second Grade
Here is what we are working on:
new solfa sound "la"
singing mi, sol, and la(matching pitch)
creating with rhythms that we know(ta, titi, and rest) quarter note, paired eighth notes, and quarter rest)
Moving our body to music movements with a partner that are specific and by themself
Improvisation on known rhythms- speech piece Bubble, Bubble, Bubble
Third Grade
Here is what we are working on:
new solfa sound "re"
singing do, re, mi, sol, la(matching pitch)
creating with rhythms that we know(ta, titi, rest, ta-ah) quarter note, paired eighth notes, quarter rest, and half note.)
Moving our body to music movements with a partner and/or by themselves that are specific.
How to blow into the recorder on a "B" fingering and how to use their tongue to stop and start the airflow to create rhythm on the note "B". A book we are using are Birdsong by Betsy Franco and a poem "How do you do".
Fourth Grade
Here is what they are working on:
a new rhythm that has 3 sounds, uneven, slow fast fast that happens all on one heart beat
matching pitch on do re mi sol la
playing the recorder on E GAB with the book The Doorbell Rand by Pat Hutchins, reading and playing GAB from the staff with new songs
moving to music with a partner and/or by themselves to a set of specific movements
how to do improvisation on known rhythms with a partner.
Fifth Grade
Here is what they are working on:
a new solfa sound low la, a sound lower than do
matching pitch la, do re mi so la
Hiccup Cannon singing and playing it on the xylophones(barred instruments)
moving to music with a partner and/or by themselves to a set of specific movements
improvisation with known rhythms with a partner.
Sixth Grade
Here is what we are working on:
placing what sol, la, do re mi sol la do' on the staff if they know where 1 note is.
matching pitch on sol, la, do re mi sol la. do'
Hiccup Cannon- picking a theme, matching words of that theme to a given rhythm, adding body percussion to the rhythm and words, learning the the melody by singing, and then playing the melody on the xylophones
a new rhythm that is two sounds over 2 beats that is uneven, one is long and the other is short/fast
moving to music with a partner and/or by themselves to a set of specific movements
Band
The 5th & 6th Grade Bands at Prairie Elementary are now in full swing! 5th grade students are mastering classic tunes like "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and are excited to continue growing their skills. Meanwhile, the 6th Grade Band is advancing into more complex music, working on extended techniques such as expanding their range and tackling more interesting melodies. Don't forget—the 6th Grade Honor Band kicks off on October 22nd.
Strings
Strings at Prairie is off to an amazing start this year! With 23 string players across the 5th and 6th grade we’ve already made tremendous progress in just the first few weeks of class!
5th Grade Update:
Our 5th graders are mastering the basics with the first five notes and are currently learning pieces like "Don’t Tell Aunt Rhody" and "Ah, Claire de la Lune." We also have been practicing perfect posture and it's starting to show! They are starting to look like professional musicians!
6th Grade Update:
Our 6th graders are quickly diving back in with concert pieces, including “Ode to Joy” and a multi-movement piece called "Two dances": “Waltz” and “Barn Dance.” They are working on their ensemble skill and are on their way to playing with harmonies!
Please join us for our first concert for 5th and 6th grade will be November 14th at 6:30 in the Indian Hills Middle School Gym!

Choir
Choir is working on our Festival pieces( Oct. 22 East @7), The Cat Came Back, Dona Nobis, and Kusimama. All pieces can be found in the Canvas section labeled Panther Choir. Please make sure you have joined the Remind app and put in the code h968h89. There have been some changes to the grade level dates. I will get those updated and sent to you ASAP. We are also going to start working on another piece called All the Pretty Little Horses to sing on the kindergarten and 1st grade program.

Buidling Blocks for rhythm
Students are using these building to create their own rhythm pattern and to use in an activity called Question and Answer where students are developing their improvisation skills.

3rd grade is exploring the recorder and 4th grade is adding a new note E.
Hiccup Cannon
5th and 6th grade students are learning how to sing the Hiccup Cannon in cannon and then we are going to learn how to play it on the xylophones
Steady Beat
1st grade students are learning how to keep the steady beat on our icons and that rhythm is different than steady beat.
4 Voices
Kindergarten is working on identifying and using their 4 voices.
