Getting Ready For Kindergarten
Kindergarten readiness refers to a child's preparedness to enter school, both academically and socially. It encompasses a range of skills and abilities that help children succeed in a structured learning environment.
Academically, children should have basic knowledge of:
- letters
- numbers
- shapes
- colors
Socially, they should be able to:
- follow simple instructions
- share with peers
- express their needs and feelings verbally
Physical readiness is also important such as:
- the ability to hold a pencil and use scissor
- button and zipper their own clothing
- independence with toileting
Parents and caregivers can support kindergarten readiness by engaging children in activities that promote learning, such as reading together, playing educational games, and encouraging curiosity and exploration. Ensuring children have a positive attitude towards learning and social interactions will ease their transition into the school environment.
