Weekly Community Updates - January 31, 2025
Dear Students and Families,
Today, we welcomed almost 30 professionals to Oceana for Career Day! Each student saw at least three different professionals to learn about their career and journey. We hope students use this information to think about how they will start their own career journey for life after high school.
Have a great weekend!
Take care,
Maritza Torres
Career Day
A big thank you to all the professionals who took time out of their day to speak at Career Day! Also, a big shout out to Mr. Mattias to planned Career Day and found so many presenters. ASB students welcomed our guests and served as student hosts in each room. Lastly, the Foods & Nutrition classes prepared and served a wonderful lunch to all of our professionals.
SamTrans Proposed Changes to Route 49
SamTrans wants any Feedback! SamTrans is recommending route 49’s afternoon routing to match routes 10 and 110 and go straight on Manor Dr to Esplanade Ave to avoid the difficult right turn and traffic. 49 will then use Monterey Rd to get back on route on Palmetto Ave (see image below). This change will serve the same bus stops today, so the only effect on students will hopefully be a quicker trip.
Please share any feedback on this google form by Thursday, February 27, 2025 which will be shared to SamTrans. SamTrans plans to implement the change if there is none by August 2025.
If parents or students have any concerns or questions, please email to customerservicesupport@samtrans.com or call SamTrans Customer Service at 1-800-660-4287.
Course Request 2025-2026 - FAMILY EVENING DATE CHANGE
Students will receive their Course Request Sheets for their 2025-2026 schedules during a FlexTime presentation with the counselors between Jan 23 and Feb 6. These Course Request Sheets are due February 12 to the main office.
Families - If you want to learn more about graduation requirements and what classes your students can request for, you can come to an information session (either Monday 2/3 evening @ 6:00pm in the library or Wednesday 2/5 morning @ 7:45am in the staff lounge).
Due to a scheduling conflict, the evening date is changed to Monday 2/3 at 6pm.
These dates can be found on Oceana Events Calendar.
CyberSharks Saturday 2/1
Come cheer on the CyberSharks tomorrow (Saturday 2/1) for our last robotics tournament of the season! It's being held at Jefferson High School, in their main gym. Unlike the previous matches, this will be an elimination, where only one team (out of 16 in the league) will continue to the next level. As a result, it will be a long day. While the teams need to show up around 8am, the games will likely begin closer to 11am. The goal is for the award ceremony (the last event) to end around 5pm.
There's no cost to attend, and you can come and go as you wish. Usually, the main parking gate on Mission St is closed, so your best bet is to navigate to the alternate entrance at the end of Bruno Ave, which is also where the main gym is.

Biliteracy Seal on Student's Diploma
Did you know that students can earn a Biliteracy Seal on their diploma?
Students who exhibit proficiency in English and a second language can qualify for a State Seal of Biliteracy on their Diploma. For Seniors who have met the English proficiency requirement, they can either complete their second language proficiency by finishing (1) 4 years of a second language in high school courses or (2) passing an AP exam in the second language, or (3) passing a language proficiency test paid by the district.
If your Senior student wants to complete the second language requirement through the district-paid test, please fill out this form (we need to order the tests by January 31).
