Biddeford Center of Technology
December 20, 2023
Dear Students and Parents,
Our programs have been busy this fall with many field trips, guest speakers and community projects.
The Biddeford Regional Center of Technology's electrical program has a strong partnership with Rexel USA. In an effort to support trade programming, Rexel USA invited our electrical program to complete a Grow the Trade Tool Wish List, sponsored by Dewalt and Lenox Tools. We are pleased to announce that through that wish list, BRCOT 's electrical program was selected to receive a generous donation of several Lenox and Dewalt tools including a cable cutter, stud and joist drills and more. Keith Huot and Jason Smith presented the donation to Superintendent Jeremy Ray, BRCOT Director Paulette Bonneau, and BRCOT Electrical Instructor Mike Bouthillette.
If you have recently driven by BRCOT you have seen that two J1 houses are almost complete. This project has involved strong collaboration between our carpentry, plumbing and electrical programs. The houses are being built through a community partnership. Once complete the houses will be moved to their permanent location and new construction will begin on additional houses.
Many of our programs have been going out in the community to learn more about their fields of study:
- BRCOT’s Business/Marketing program has been partnering with our engineering and machining programs to design, market and sell various holiday items including ornaments, keychains and stocking stuffers. Some of the items were designed based on requests from one of our community partners, Heart of Biddeford.
- Students in our Intro to Education program have started their internships throughout various schools within the Biddeford School Department. Students are each paired with an experienced educator and assist with lessons. Students in our Intro to Early Childhood program have been welcoming students to the nursery school. Our students plan and provide lessons to their students through various stations and using various methods.
- Our Plumbing program visited the Plumbing and HVAC program at SMCC. Students were excited to learn about extending the knowledge they are gaining at COT into an HVAC program. A few of our students are now considering his pathway after graduation.
- On November 30th, BRCOT’s engineering students participated in the Career Exploration Seminar at SAPPI’s Technology Center in Westbrook. Students got to see a presentation on Research and Development then take a tour of the facility to see engineering in action. Students learned about the UMaine Pulp and Paper Foundation. Students interested in engineering may choose to apply to participate in a summer program called Consider Engineering to further their learning. (Students do not have to be enrolled in BRCOT’s engineering program to be eligible.) For more information visit https://umaineppf.org/consider-engineering/ or scan the QR Code below.
- As you can see from the photos below our students have also gone to Boston to see the Body Worlds exhibit, visited a CMP substation and our CNA students have begun their clinicals.
Our programs have also been hosting many guest speakers. Our Business Academy and IT programs enjoyed Jason Sun, Brenna Minard, and Simon Daignault, from TSA (Transportation Security Administration) who shared information about the history of this organization, airport security measures and about the many diverse, career opportunities. The Business Academy has also recently got to hear from Jen Morrow, Lincoln Lofts Property Manager. In addition to sharing her career path, we discussed leases and other important components of renting. Our Auto Body Technology students got to meet Mr. Murphy from Norton Abrasives. Mr. Murphy came to our Auto Body Technology program to share new and exciting products available in the trade!

Students visit the Body Worlds exhibit in Boston
Four of BRCOT’s programs attended the Body Worlds: The Anatomy of Happiness exhibit in Boston on December 14th. About 60 students from our CNA, EMT, Intro to Medical Science and Athletic Training programs, along with their instructors and other chaperones enjoyed this experience. They got to see real human bodies to learn about anatomy and physiology.
Electrical Students visit CMP substation
Our electrical students visited a CMP Substation on 11/29. Students got to learn a lot about the substation and hear about various career pathways which has led to exploring educational opportunities at both Kennebec Valley Community College and Washington County Community Colleges.
CNA Students have started clinicals!
BRCOT’s CNA program partners with Seal Rock and Southern Maine Health to help students earn the clinical hours they will need to sit for their CNA state exam in the spring. Students report learning a lot each day and are enjoying helping patients and residents.
Consider Engineering, a Summer Program Hosted by UMaine Pulp & Paper Foundation.
UMaine Pulp and Paper Foundation offers a summer program for high school juniors called Consider Engineering. Juniors interested in engineering may choose to apply to further their learning. (Students do not have to be enrolled in BRCOT’s engineering program to be eligible.) For more information visit https://umaineppf.org/consider-engineering/ or scan the QR Code
