Attendance Corner
This graph below shows our attendance for this year (blue line) compared to last year (red line).
As you can see, our attendance has slipped substantially in the last three months, primarily due to illnesses during the winter. We wanted to share this information with our parents to emphasize how important daily attendance is for both our students’ success and that of the school as a whole. If you are considering non-necessary absences during the rest of the school year, please consider how much ground we have to make up! Thank you for your continuing efforts to get your students to school regularly and on time.
State Testing
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Summative Assessments and California Science Test (CAST) 2024-2025
Each spring, students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).
Depending on your child’s grade, they will take the following tests:
● Students in Grades 3 – 8 and 11 will take English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics tests
● Students in Grades 5, 8, and 11 will take a science test (grade 12 will take if they have not taken it in HS yet).
The computer-based tests measure what your child knows and can do.
To learn more about the CAASPP system, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding webpage at

CA Physical Fitness Test
In February and March our students in grades 5-6 will participate in the California Physical Fitness Test (PFT). The FITNESSGRAM is the required annual PFT for students in grades five, seven, and nine in California public schools. (6th and 8th grade students are tested each year to support improvement and transition for the next year.) This health-related fitness test, developed by The Cooper Institute, is intended to help students acquire lasting habits of regular physical activity.
The FITNESSGRAM includes tests for five areas of fitness: Aerobic Capacity, Abdominal Strength and Endurance, Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility, Upper Body Strength and Endurance, and Flexibility.
On February 7th, all fifth and sixth grade students received a 2-page informational packet on the test. Additional copies will be in the hanging folder inside the office.
The Harry Dewey School Library is a fantastic hub for knowledge and exploration! We are so excited to see our student actively using the online catalog to research topics they love. Have you checked it out together yet? Explore here: https://dewey.sanjuan.edu/academics/library
