"Let Go, and Let God"
God who is love,
Love is our calling, and the goal for which you have made us. As we begin this new school year, may our love in action reveal to our world that we are people of justice and mercy. May our daily words and example show clearly that we are people of faith and hope. In the ways we reflect you daily, may everyone recognize us as people of joy. Help us to never forget how much you love us, and to cherish your life within us, which gives energy and direction to our loving. May we hear your call to love generously and inclusively, and may we call our world to be more loving also. All of this we ask in the name of Jesus, our Friend and our Lord.
Amen.
To begin our school year, we’ll focus on our first virtue –Faith. Faith is the great virtue of believing in God and trusting that God is with us.
A faithful person believes that we are created, guided by and destined to be reunited with God.
A faithful person believes that God helps us to create a safe and caring school.
A Faithful person…
prays whenever they can
learns from Scripture stories
assumes that there is good in everyone
knows that we are all loved by God
OPENING PRAYER
Dear God, as we gather today as a school community of faith,
Nurture the love in us as we journey,
Help us welcome all who come our way.
Deepen our faith to see all of life through your eyes.
We come to you asking for the grace and strength
To walk each day with you as we work to create
A safe, caring and inclusive school.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son, who lived to show us your way.
Amen

Together Again
We are all excited to start the 2024-2025 school year. Over the next few days, you will be receiving a Community Information Bulletin sent out centrally from the board via School Messenger. The Bulletin contains some updates and reminders for the upcoming school year. As we prepare for the reopening of schools and the safe return of your children, I am committed to ensuring that St. Jude continues to be an enviornment that seeks to embody our Catholic Education Week theme for 2025, "Pilgrims of Hope".
Prior to the first day of school, students/families will also receive a notification from School Messenger indicating their teacher’s name and class assignment.
All students from SK to Grade 8 will begin school on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024. Our school hours are 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. PLEASE READ TO BOTTOM OF NEWSLETTER FOR INFORMATION ON COMBINDED GRADES AND SCHOOL REORGANIZATION.
Arrival on September 3rd
When you arrive at the school on September 3rd, staff will be available to help direct students who are unsure of their class placement, room number, exit or did not receive the notification via School Messenger. Teachers will meet their classes outside at the 8:30 am bell and enter the building through their designated doors:
- Kindergarten gate – staff will be greeting students at the gate
- Grades 1 - 8 will gather from 8:30-8:45 in the primary yard located at the rear of the school. Classes will be posted along the portapak walls with grade and teacher names.
- To be most effecient I would ask parents/guardians/caregivers to provide hugs/kisses/hi-5's at PLASP fence and allow students to walk to their lines independently if possible. Teachers will be present with lists and guidance to support students.
- PLEASE NOTE STUDENT ENTRY AFTER OUR FIST DAY WILL BE A SOFT ENTRY FROM 8:30 - 8:45 THROUGH THE PRIMARY DOORS FOR ALL STUDENTS.
Each student should arrive at school with a full, reusable water bottle along with snacks and lunch each day. If children will be going home for lunch, please send a note on the first day of school as student verification forms will not be sent home until September 9, 2024. A package of forms requiring completion will be sent home on the first day of school with all students.
Dismissal of students will take place from their assigned exits. Staff will be present in the kindergarten yard to help support dismissal. If using kiss and ride, students will be lined up by grade along the front of the building. This will be done to reduce congestion of students and cars into passing traffic. At this time, the church parking lot has not expressed any concern regarding our families temporarily parking to collect students. Please consider using this parking as a collect students and reduce congestion in our Kiss and Ride.
We are very excited to receive your children on September 3rd. We care deeply for your children and are committed to providing safe, caring, healthy and inclusive learning and working environments for all students and staff. May God bless all our St. Jude families and staff as we move towards the opening of the 2024-2025 school year together.

Truth & Reconciliation Week
September marks Truth & Reconciliation Week which is an opportunity to learn about the beauty, joy and incredible contributions of Indigenous Peoples. It is also a time to reflect on, and learn about, the impacts of residential schools and injustices towards Indigenous Peoples. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) takes place on September 30. Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community intergenerational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. On Monday, September 30, all staff & students are encouraged to wear orange.
Students and Families who identify as First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is providing an opportunity for students to self-identify their First Nation, Métis and/or Inuit ancestry in a voluntary and confidential manner. This program will allow the Board to provide expanded supports, events and opportunities to First Nation, Inuit and Métis students. Indigenous students and families will have access to culture and language programs, funding opportunities through potential scholarships and bursaries, and monthly programming for students and families. Relevant information will be sent directly to students and families about upcoming cultural events and opportunities which help to build community and a sense of Indigenous pride in DPCDSB.
Watch what Indigenous students and family members have to say about their experience:
For more information and how to self-identify please visit: https://www3.dpcdsb.org/students/indigenous-self-identification
CHANGES TO OUR LUNCH EATING AND RECESS TIMES
I would like to share some changes that will take effect to our school's lunch recess and eating times. Starting immediately, students will now eat indoors for the first 20 minutes of lunch from 11:42 a.m. until 12:02 p.m. Students will then tidy up and exit outside for 40 minutes of outdoor play from 12:02 p.m. until 12:42 p.m. These changes will help to ensure that food days such as Pizza Days are supported by staff to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Peel Health Update
Dear families,
Road safety is an important topic, especially coming back to school. To ensure a safe arrival, remember to:
· Choose active transportation (e.g., walking or cycling) whenever possible. This helps the environment too! If you live too far to walk the whole way to school, consider parking 5 minutes away to avoid traffic and get some bonus exercise into your day.
· Follow all road signs when driving and obey the school drop-off and pick-up rules.
· Stay clear of fire hydrants, driveways, crosswalks or the Kiss and Ride areas when parking.
· For those who ride a school bus, visit www.STOPR.ca for more information.
Please visit these links to learn more:
· Safe school travel info sheet
· Walk and Roll to School Guide
· Peel Region’s Active Transportation website
· Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA)’s website has activities, videos, and an ArcGIS Storymap with information about active transportation in Peel Schools.
If you have any questions about the resources above, or would like more information, reach out to walkandroll@peelregion.ca.
We look forward to another excellent year of learning!
Kiss and Ride Reminders
Do not park or get out of your vehicle in this area, even if only for a few seconds. Parents who wish to get out of the car are asked to park in the designated visitor parking (parking appropriately).
Students are to exit the vehicle on the passenger side (right side).
Inclement Weather on First Day - September 3rd, 2024
If there is inclement weather, students will begin enter the school at 8:30 a.m.
Students in grades 7 & 8 are directed to go directly to their classrooms.
Students in grades 1 to 6 are directed to gather in the gym (only the student). Teachers will have signs to indicate their name.
Parents are not to proceed with students into the gym. We will have staff to escort students into the gym. Parents who want to find out who their child’s teacher is are asked to stand in the front foyer where a staff will give them the name of teacher.
As a publicly funded school board, DPCDSB must follow each of the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Policy/Program Memoranda (PPM). Recently, the Ministry of Education’s Policy/Program Memoranda (PPM) No. 128 Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct was updated.
The update and direction to school boards covers two specific areas: cell phone use during the school day and vaping. DPCDSB has updated related existing policies and our Catholic Code of Conduct to align with these Ministry directives, which are in effect as of September 2024.
CELL PHONE USAGE
• Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 must now keep their phones turned off or set to silent mode and out of sight for the school day, unless otherwise allowed by the educator during instructional time for a specific purpose.
• Students in Grades 7 to 12 must store their phones out of view and powered off or set to silent mode during instructional time, unless otherwise explicitly allowed by the educator during instructional time for a specific purpose.
• Students who need to use their phones or other electronic devices for health and medical reasons, e.g., glucose monitoring, medication administration reminders, etc., or to support specific special education needs, may continue to use them during the school day following consultation with school administration.
• Contravention of these Ministry of Education expectations will be addressed according to the procedures outlined within DPCDSB’s Catholic Code of Conduct.
• DPCDSB is not considering the creation of a central phone depository in schools or classrooms. Instead, DPCDSB recommends students keep their devices stored in their backpack or pocket when not in use for educational purposes or for health, medical, or special education needs.
• DPCDSB is also not looking for educators to confiscate phones, rather, school administrators will deploy a progressive discipline approach with those found to be in violation of the outlined restrictions. It is hoped that student behaviours and actions will align with the new rules. Nevertheless, we will be closely monitoring the situation during the first weeks of school, so we have a better idea of the reality in classrooms before we consider additional steps.
• It is recognized that some parents need to communicate with their children during the school day, and in such instances, parents should contact the school office.
• Report cards may include comments on students’ distraction levels in class.
ANTI-VAPING
• PPM 128 also includes a strict anti-vaping policy where parents and guardians are to be immediately notified if their children are found vaping on or within 20 metres of school property, and the vapes in a student’s possession will be confiscated. There are immediate consequences for students caught with vapes, vaping, supplying vapes, or in possession of illegal substances as outlined within DPCDSB’s Catholic Code of Conduct.
• The Ministry is also providing school boards with funding to install vape detectors as well as wrap-around supports for students to support learning, address addictive behaviours, as well as dedicated training for teachers and supports for parents on how best to manage this change. Additional information will be shared as available.
SOCIAL MEDIA
• PPM 128 identifies the removal of social media sites from school board networks. DPCDSB had previously removed these sites so there was no action required on this component of PPM 128.
PROGRAM/CURRICULUM CHANGES
The Ministry of Education has put into effect the following changes for students entering Grade 9 in the 2024-2025 school year.
FINANCIAL LITERACY GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
Students entering Grade 9 in September 2024 are required to pass a financial literacy requirement with a score of 70% as part of their graduation requirements.
The first attempt is taken during the Grade 10 mathematics course. If the student is unsuccessful, they can rewrite the test. If the student remains unsuccessful, credit recovery and other supports will be put into place to obtain completion of this requirement. This requirement is based on cumulative financial literacy learned from Grade 1 through 9.

Catholic Education: "Pilgrims of Hope"
The new school year offers us an opportunity to reflect upon our personal, professional and spiritual growth and to set some new goals.
The theme chosen for the upcoming 2025 Catholic Education Week is:
Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope
L’éducation catholique: Pèlerins d'espoir
Catholic Education Week is held each year in May in our 29 Ontario Catholic school boards. It will run from May 4, 2025 – May 9, 2025.
To begin the new school year, we’ll focus our attention on the first of our virtues – faith. Faith is the great virtue of believing in God and trusting that God is with us.
A faithful person believes that we are created, guided by and destined to be reunited with God. A faithful person believes that God’s plan for us includes the right to be safe, especially at school.
A Faithful Person...
- Prays regularly and reverently
- Learns from Scripture stories
- Honours people’s God‐given names
- Assumes that there is good in everyone
The beginning of a new school year heralds a wealth of exciting prospects. A blank piece of a
paper is a good analogy for the opportunities that lay ahead—it could become a letter, a graph, a map, a short story, a piece of art work or, a paper air plane. The potential is limited
only by the imagination of the person holding it.
The following passage challenges us to look forward to the exciting opportunities all around us; in our work and in our relationships: “Be aware of the spirit of God at work in the ordinary activities and experiences of our daily life. Spiritual learning continues throughout life and often in unexpected ways. There is inspiration to be found all around us, in the natural world, in the sciences and arts, in our work and friendships, in our sorrows as well as in our joys. Be open to new light from whatever source it may come.” We hope that all students can, this year, take advantage of the inspiration that can be found all around them. The staff of St. Jude Catholic Elementary School look forward to seeing our students and extend a warm welcome to students and their families new to our community.
Welcome Back!
As the new school year begins, we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for the kindness and support extended to us as we prepare for a new school year at St. Jude. Sincere thanks and gratitude to all of the staff who have given of their time in order to prepare for the arrival of your children.
We wish to extend a warm welcome to all the new families to our school community and welcome back to all those who are returning. A special greeting is also extended to our Junior Kindergarten children who are starting school for the first time. May your days here be memorable.
We are all looking forward to an exciting year with an abundance of new learning in the 2024-2025 academic year. Our staff is dedicated and committed to working with our parents, parish and community partners as they support the children in their quest for a Catholic faith-based education. In cooperation with our Parish Team, our Catholic School Council, our Superintendent Mrs. Belchior, our Trustee, Mr. Thomas as well as you, the parents our school will work to support the well-being and achievement of your children.
Please note, you can follow us on Twitter @SDpcdsb for a window into learning at our school. Our school newsletters and regular updates will be emailed and readily available on our St. Jude School website at https://www.dpcdsb.org/JUDEE.
Wishing you many blessings for the 2024-2025 academic year!

Staggered Entry
To continue to ensure limits on student and staff physical interaction, we are again beginning this school year with a staggered start so that teachers can rehearse/review health and safety protocol with students in smaller groups.
First Week – Student Arrival Procedures - September 3-6
•All Year Two FDK (Senior Kindergarten) – Grade 8 students begin school on Tuesday, September 3, 2024
•Kindergarten educator teams will be spread out in a designated area to receive students, with appropriate signage to indicate teacher name.
•All classroom teachers will be spread out across the school yard with adequate spacebetween them, and with appropriate signage to indicate teacher name.
•Non-classroom staff will be situated in a gathering area to support those students andfamilies that are unsure of their class placement or have not received the notification of their class placement.
•Special Education staff and Administrators will circulate and direct families to the appropriate ‘greeting’ staff as indicated above.
•Special Education staff and Administrators will greet the bus students (if any) and be onhand to remind families / ensure that only students from the appropriate alpha (e.g. YearOne FDK) are being dropped off for school.
•Parents and Guardians should be aware that at times this could be a long process.
First Day of School!
Teachers will be available to direct you and will be identifiable by their safety vests. In order to maintain distancing guidelines we are asking that only one parent/ guardian / caregiver bring your child(ren) to school. Parents are not permitted to enter the building with their child(ren). Teachers will meet the children in the designated zones in the school yard rain or shine.
Dismissal:
In order to maintain distancing guidelines we will be using a staggered dismissal. We will begin calling students for dismissal beginning at 3:11. Students will be dismissed in the same area as they entered in the morning. If you have a young child teachers will wait with them until they are directly given to an adult listed on his/her pick up list. Teachers will be asking who will be picking up your child on the first morning. If you have an older child, please ensure that they know how they are getting home and with whom.
Problem? If you have a question on the first morning, please talk to a staff member. There will be extra staff outside to help with lost and new students.
Reminders:
Please be reminded NOT TO PARK YOUR CARE OR STOP your car for an extended period in the Kiss & Ride lane at anytime. Please observe parking signs.
Please be reminded that you are not allowed to photograph or video any child other than your own on school property. We discourage photography on school property due to privacy and safety concerns. As well, we discourage adults from observing children during lunch and recess play time. We strive to maintain a safe environment at all times for our staff and students.

Volunteers at St. Jude
All new employees, volunteers, service providers, individuals requiring a placement for professional certification and other (the"applicant") are required to provide a Criminal Background Check that is satisfactory to the Board prior to the commencement of any duties. The Criminal Background Check must meet all of the conditions outlined below:
- must have been completed by a police service within the preceding 6 months
- must include a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) including a search of the pardoned sex offender database
- must be an original
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the above conditions are met. Any cost related to obtaining the Criminal Background Check is the sole responsibility of the applicant.
This is an important document. You should make a copy of your Criminal Background Check for your own records prior to submitting.
The Board's recommendation to select and individual for duties is conditional upon the receipt and review of an original Criminal Background Check. The applicant must obtain a Criminal Background Check through a local police service in the area in which they reside. Police Services usually require an applicant to complete a form and provide one or two pieces of photo identification before they can access the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database electronically. Searches completed by any private company or organization other than a police service will not be accepted.
Please be advised of the following:
- Processing times with police services can be quite lengthy. Some searches can take in excess of 12 weeks to complete
- Some police services include information regarding police contact under the Mental Health Act as part of the VSS Process; others do not. The Board treats all information it receives through the Criminal Background Check and VSS process consistent with its obligations under the Human Rights Code. Unless and until the Board policy is changed, the applicant is not specifically required by the Board to disclose information regarding police contact under the Mental Health Act.
- Many police services can provide the applicant with multiple originals if requested at the time of application (if required e.g. student placements/service providers).
Should the applicant submit a Criminal Background Check showing evidence of a police background, confirmation of his/her duties will be postponed pending a review of the information. A police background will not necessarily disqualify the applicant. The Board reserves the right to request the applicant to provide additional information with regard to his/her application for duties. The final decision will be made by the Superintendent of Human Resources in consultation with the "Criminal Background Check Management Review Committee".
Below are the requirements which are unique for some particular Police Services
If you live in Peel (905-453-2121, ext. 4390)
You must obtain a Police Records Search from Peel Police Headquarters, 775 Hurontario St., Brampton. Community Organizations and Volunteers must obtain an Authorization Letter from the school at which you wish to volunteer.

Monitoring and Responding to Reports of illness.
If a student becomes ill during the day and/or exhibits signs of illness, they will be required to enter into a separate health room/area designated by the school until the parent can pick them up. The student may be provided with a disposable mask to wear until picked up, and staff assisting the student will be asked to wear a face shield in addition to a mask. The separate health room/area will then be closed until it can be deep cleaned and sanitized. Please note that symptoms related to COVID-19 are not the only reasons unwell children should refrain from coming to school. Transmissible disease puts all students, staff and families at risk.
Brining Lunches to School
As per Board direction, please be advised that for those students staying for lunch, they will need to arrive with necessary lunch and snacks. Lunch drop off and services such as Uber Eats are discouraged.
Lunch

Medication
1. A completed form must accompany each request for medication to be stored by the school. It is the prerogative of the Principal to decide whether or not medication will be stored or given out and may establish such conditions as are deemed necessary regarding any specific request.
2. School personnel will not assume responsibility for the administration of any medication.
3. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to monitor the quantity of medication stored by the school.
4. Please let the office know if you require Storage of Medication Forms so they can be forwarded to you.
ANAPHYLAXIS
Allergies In The Classroom
As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that St. Jude is an allergen aware school. There are pupils and staff in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as dairy, peanut and nut products. Exposure to even the smallest quantities can cause severe life threatening reactions. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, and latex. An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. We at St. Jude School would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain nut or nut byproducts which could potentially harm a pupil. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of the food restrictions. Please do not send food for birthdays or special occasions. We look forward to your co-operation in making this a safe year for all of our pupils.

Absence Reporting
The purpose of this program is to ensure that your child arrives safely at school. Please report online through School Messenger to inform us if your child(ren) will not be attending school for the day or if they will be late. If you do not contact the school, we will attempt to contact you. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
School Textbooks
School textbooks are school property and are loaned to
the students annually. The expectation is that textbooks will be returned at the end of the school year. Students are responsible for these textbooks and will be asked to pay if these books go missing or have been vandalized. The cost of an average textbook is about $50.00 each. Please encourage your child to take care of textbooks!
Child Safety
The Child and Family Services Act compel educators to report any issues that may compromise a child’s welfare. If a staff member suspects any issue that may affect a child’s safety, then the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) must be contacted. It is not the role of the educator to investigate. That is CAS’s role.
Catholic School Council
The purpose of Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) is, through the active participation of Parents/Guardians, to improve student achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to Parents/Guardians. A Catholic School Council’s primary means of achieving its purpose is by making recommendations in accordance with this policy and regulation to the Principal of the school and to the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Also, to help the Principal and the Teachers bring appropriate community resources to the school and to help the Principal and the Teachers ensure that Parents/Guardians recognize and exercise their right to participate in the education of their children
Head Injuries
When a student receives an injury/bump to the head (however minor), it is a Board Policy that we inform parents. You will be contacted by phone, a phone message will be left at one of your contact numbers or a note will be left in your child’s agenda if you are unavailable. This is precautionary only and we ask that you check your child when they get home for any signs of a concussion or illness. Electronic or Communication Agenda’s should be checked by parents daily for this reason, as well as to check for any notes from the teacher or office. A copy of the concussion brochure is always available on our school website.
Indoor Shoes
At this time we are not asking students to bring in additional shoes for the indoors. We will revisit this as the weather gets colder.
Personal Electronic Devices (P.E.D.s)
BYOD– Bring Your Own Devices
Our vision of education in Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools is rooted in the gospel values of faith, hope and love. All sectors of society, including the education sector, must work to keep pace with our rapidly changing world. Our teaching and learning environments - our schools and classrooms - must continue to change and adapt to ensure that our students continue to succeed. Our students and staff are already engaged as 21st century learners, living and shaping ways of being, becoming and belonging in our world. St. Jude School is a PED ready school. DPCDSB Personal Electronic Device Use form with Wi-Fi Network Student Agreement will be signed for all new registrations. It is also be available on our website for download. Please read it over and have yourself and your child sign it so that they may bring their devices to school to be used for educational purposes as directed by staff.
Personal Electronic Devices on Board Premises and/or Board Sanctioned Events for Educational Purposes:
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission (GF 066, Network User Application and Agreement). Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices.
