I am not sure if your child has come home and said anything but it is a big topic of conversation here at the schoolhouse...Sensor Technology in our bathrooms. We are still in the installation phase and I will communicate more as we are closer to activation. See below for more info:
In an effort to further enhance student safety, LCPS piloted the use of sensor technology in five high schools’ restrooms in the spring of 2024. While the vast majority of LCPS students are mindful and respectful of other students, LCPS is aware that undesirable behaviors occur inside the restrooms, including vaping. In order to further deter vaping and safety for all students, as governed by School Board policies, LCPS is implementing restroom sensor technology in all high schools to help meet this need.
Our high school’s sensor technology installation is underway. You may see signs being posted that sensor technology is in use or indicators in the school as we test and calibrate the sensors. This sensor technology uses multi-functional health, safety, and vape detection sensors; however, no personally identifiable information will be recorded.
The sensors alert school administrators and security personnel of concerns such as high occupancy, loitering, vaping/smoking (tobacco and THC), and aggression, and can identify calls for help. School administrators and school security personnel will respond appropriately and expeditiously to the sensor alerts and will discipline according to the Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Sensor technology is not present in staff restrooms.
