Principal Update
Greetings FitzGerald Families!
Please see a message here from Dr. Mendonsa, Waltham Superintendent of Schools, about the precautions being taken with the artic temperatures predicted for our area next week:
Dear WPS Community,
According to early weather reports, a blast of arctic air will be in our region Monday-Wednesday of next week with temperatures dropping into single digits. There is no school on Monday, January 20th in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. However, on Tuesday and Wednesday, bus drivers with Eastern Bus Company, who have room on their bus and can do so safely, will stop and offer students who are walking to school a ride. I want to thank Eastern Bus Company and their drivers for supporting all of our students on what will be some very cold days next week.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Mendonsa
*Please see the graphic of this information in the picture below.

An Update from Ms. Bernard, FitzGerald School Adjustment Counselor
Greetings from the SAC Office!
We hope everyone had a relaxing winter break and is geared up for the second half of the school year by working hard to get smarter every day!
During Community Circles this month we are focusing on the SEL skills of our Core Value Empathy, the CASEL Competency Social Awareness and the Habit of seeking to understand others, while being understood. Students are engaging in meaningful conversations with their classmates and teachers on what that looks like and sounds like here at school daily. Students are also learning ways they can demonstrate empathy and social awareness throughout the building and in their community by understanding the perspectives of others and putting themselves in someone else’s shoes when a friend is hurt or sad. Through role playing and collaborative discussions, students are increasing their awareness and developing their capacity to understand these very important skills.
The Fourth Grade Council has begun meeting individually and brainstorming ideas for their school wide initiatives. Some ideas so far include homework buddies before school, the Buddy Bench, and creating recess games for use during indoor recess. It’s amazing to see our leaders shine while they help support each other expressing thoughtful ideas and feedback to one another.
Our Fifth Graders have been also working hard on their leadership opportunities here at school through the Green Team, Safety Squad and Panther Partners. These students are so eager to help throughout the building and are gaining a sense of responsibility by reporting to their spaces as assigned.
We are so proud of our student leaders who are engaged and invested in the many leadership opportunities here at FitzGerald!
Please don’t hesitate to reach out should you have any questions or if you would like additional information about our SEL Skills.
Enjoy the long weekend!
Jesse Bernard
Specialist Spotlight: Music with Mr. Irwin!
Hello Fitzy Family! I hope 2025 is off to a great start! Please see below to learn about what each grade has been doing to start the new year.
Grade K - Kindergarten has begun learning their first musical instrument - the rhythm sticks. They have been learning to keep a steady beat on the rhythm sticks. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow. They’ve been doing this by copying my playing and by finding the steady beat in various songs and rhymes. Kindergarten has also begun learning about improvisation by singing melodies they make up on their own while Mr. Irwin accompanies them on the ukulele.
Grade 1 - First grade is continuing their work on singing posture, singing voices, and matching pitch while singing echo songs and simple songs. They have also been improvising their own melodies as well in a minor key. In these improvisations, students have been focusing on how to have a musical conversation by taking some of the same material sung by the person before them, but still altering it to make it a conversation.
Grade 2 - In addition to our normal singing objectives, second grade has been working on playing ostinatos (a short repeating pattern) on drums, learning about dynamics (the volume of music.) They will soon be continuing their work with eighth notes and quarter notes by decoding the patterns they hear.
Grade 3 - I hope you have been hearing beautiful music at home from your recorder players! January marks the time when recorders become my main focus in music class. For the remainder of the year, students will be trying to earn “recorder belts” as they master songs on the recorder. We began working on Hot Cross Buns in January which is their white belt song. Please encourage your child at home to play with a gentle breath and to have their left hand on top. That will be super helpful!
Grade 4 - Fourth grade has been focusing their time using Song Maker from Chrome Music Lab. They have been working on creating their own song in Binary form (AB form) where both sections sound different but still belong together.
Grade 5 - Mrs. Vizard has joined music class to help us work with a website called Soundtrap. They have been choosing “loops” to make an ABA form song, making sure that the sections sound different but still belong together. Soon they will be adding an improvisation on top of their loops using “musical typing.” Then they will refine their work by making any changes necessary to make their song exactly as they like.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Principal Coffee Talks
What are Principal Coffee Talks?
Principal Coffee Talk times have traditionally been offered once monthly for the last several years at FitzGerald. This is an informal conversation time where family members can connect with Mrs. Santillo and/or Mrs. Lamoly and ask any questions about FitzGerald School that they may have. This year, we are going to try to hold these monthly informal conversation times at different times of day, so that there are more options available for those that would like to join.
Next Coffee Talk Time:
Date: Monday February 10th
Time: 8:45am
Location: Cafeteria (a link will also be sent out for anyone that would like to join virtually)
