From our Health Services Staff
Hearing screening for grades K, 2 and 5
The District Nurses will be doing Hearing screening at Almond School for all Kindergarten, 2nd, 5th grades on March 2, 2020. If your child has a known hearing loss, please notify the Health Services Staff (nurses@lasdschools.org) before the day of the screening. The nurse will mail a referral form and call the parents of students who do not pass the Hearing screening.
Illness Prevention
Student safety is our top priority in the Los Altos School District. We are taking every precaution to be sure that our students remain healthy as we learn more about the coronavirus.
As public health departments across the nation are working to identify anyone who might be infected to prevent further spread of the outbreak, we encourage all students, parents, and staff to take common-sense precautions to prevent the spread of all infectious diseases, including common illnesses like colds and flu.
To prevent the spread of illness, staff, students, and families are requested follow the below guidelines:
- Encourage students and staff to stay home when they are sick.
- Those who have a fever at school should go home and stay home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
- Separate sick students and staff from others, ideally in a separate place, until they can be picked up to go home.
- Promote hand hygiene among students and staff through education, scheduled time for handwashing, and availability of soap and water or hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your face, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Teach and encourage proper cough etiquette—cough or sneeze into a tissue, sleeve, or arm (do not use hands).
- Perform routine surface cleaning.
- Consider not attending large gatherings, as this is where cold, flu, and other respiratory viruses often spread.
The Santa Clara County is maintaining a website with helpful information and FAQs.
We will keep our community updated with any relevant information as it becomes available.
More influenza information here: https://www.lasdschools.org/District/6315-Flu-Influenza.html
When to keep your child at home:
Here are guidelines from the District Nurses:
Keep your child at home when he/she has any of the following symptoms:
Fever
Chills
Vomiting or Diarrhea
Nausea
Sore throat or trouble swallowing
Coughing, sneezing, and/or runny nose
Rash or unusual sores or spots
Headache
Generalized muscle aches and pains
Wheezing or trouble breathing
Unusually red, crusted or burning eyes
Head Lice
Once a student becomes ill, it is imperative and required that the child stay home and not return to school until they are symptom-free for 24 hours without medication (i.e. no fever, etc for a full day after you have stopped giving medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen). Children often don’t have a fever first thing in the morning, that is why you must wait a full day to be sure the fever doesn’t return later in the day.

Walk or Wheel to School, 2/26/20
Please Join us for Walk or Wheel (WoW) to school day on February 26th. Please make a special effort to walk, bike, or scooter to school on this day. Promote less car traffic near our school, better health for our kids and the environment and a sense of community spirit.
Upon arrival at the rotunda, participating children fill out tickets before school with their first names and put them in their teacher’s cans, for two purposes:
- The class that has the highest percentage of participants gets the Golden Shoe award until the next WoW day.
- There will be an ice cream prize raffle drawing which will be awarded to students at the morning assembly later in the week.
We plan to have three stations for taking tickets: the front bike rack, the back entrance to the playground, and the rotunda. We will be handing out Stretch Island Fruit Leather as a small snack to those who walk or wheel to school. If your child has an allergy to certain types of fruit, please remind them to ask for a pencil instead.
Come early so kids aren’t late to class!
For those families who live too far to walk or wheel to school, plan to park about a quarter of a mile away, and walk or wheel the rest of the way to school. It’s fun and feels great!
Thanks for supporting your kids and our community!
