Unity - Coming Together as a Community
I want to thank you for all the feedback that has been provided this last week in reference to our assembly on Stopping the Hate and Starting the Healing.
Our school wide assembly was designed to address how to handle hurtful comments, racial aggression, and wrong doing from the platform of love and understanding. The two day assembly was designed to have community members speak to their own experiences of hatred and how they responded with love. The speaker on day two was a mediator from the center for dialogue and resolution and his presentation asked students to lean into the question of what is the difference between justice and vengeance and what are some things that we can all start to do differently to reach out to those that have harmed us. I wanted to convey that none of this has anything to do with police - at all. I can say assuredly that the topic of police in schools was never a part of the design and most definitely not appropriate for school discussion.
This assembly was designed to help teacher students how to extended grace, respect and caring for each other instead of casting shade, doubt, and judgement. It was also intended to help students connect respectfully and appreciate differences between beliefs, values, and points of view especially in an attempt to heal and recognize the divide that is present as we inch closer to the aftermath of the election regardless of outcome. It was intended to be a proactive approach to helping students heal. I stand by that design and intent as it was genuine and came from a place of humanity.
Respectfully - Greg Borgerding

DISTRICT VISION FOR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING: The 4J school district is working to prioritize Social Emotional Learning in ways that are meaningful. In that work, we wish to integrate the identified priorities of SEL, anti-racism, and equity. All of these efforts involve the health and wellness of every individual and our community. The highest goal of this work is greater health, joy, and empowerment for all. That includes all district staff.
It is challenging work to integrate these priorities in our current circumstances, but we are committed to doing the work. We are in the early stages of the process and are reflecting on ways to give coherence and power to our efforts. Our understanding and our work are evolving.
Speaking generally, there are three themes which connect the work of anti-racism, equity, and SEL. These are a focus on identity, agency, and belonging.
We want everyone’s identity to be explored, elevated, and celebrated – for staff and students. People should be known, respected, and protected in all of their beauty and diversity.
We want students and staff to feel a sense of agency and to be given tools and empowered to make choices which affect them – in learning, life, and as a community in our democratic republic. All people should experience equity in access to opportunities.
We want everyone to feel a deep sense of belonging to a community which supports their health, joy, and empowerment. We want everyone to experience this. A critical part of true equity is the experience of being seen and feeling a sense of belonging. The unifying goal of SEL, anti-racism, and equity work is the creation of what Dr. Martin Luther King called “the beloved community.” It is a goal worthy of our efforts.
CHARACTER STRONG: Character Strong’s high school advisory curriculum was brought in this year as one tool in our approach to encouraging conversations in the realm of SEL. It focuses on “Eight Essentials of Character.” These include patience, kindness, honesty, respect, selflessness, forgiveness, humility, and commitment. The advisory curriculum works to create student engagement around those elements of character.
Character Strong’s brick and mortar advisory lessons offer twenty-five lessons per grade level from 9th-12th grade. This year, Character Strong is offering a collective body of thirty-two lessons, which have been adapted for CDL. We will be using the CDL lessons this year and will be able to access all of the resources in future years.
Like all new tools, there will be joys and challenges in learning to work with Character Strong curriculum. We will evolve our relations to it and reflect on what works and what doesn’t work.
As we evolve, it will be one of many ways we seek to build community.
