Message from District Family School Liaison: Parent-Teacher Conferences
Students will greatly benefit from effective communication between their parents and teachers. That being said, as you may already know, parent-teacher conferences are right around the corner and I encourage you to sign up and take some time to meet your student(s)' teachers and discuss as a team how to best support your child(ren) at home. If you need assistance with how to register for parent-teacher conferences through our Meet the Teacher website, please feel free to stop by anytime between 8-5:30 PM on Monday, September 30th at Sunny Hill Elementary School.
If you have any questions, please contact Ruth Estrada directly at 847-842-3565
Every Friday! Rep Hispanic Heritage Attire
Each Friday during Hispanic Heritage Month, wear something that honors Hispanic culture!
Come walk in the Barrington Homecoming Parade!
Students and families can walk with our Student Council to represent Sunny Hill. Wear your Sunny Hill shirt or our district colors, red, black and white. The theme this year is Under the Stars. You can add some bling to your Sunny Hill spirit wear or bring your own star wand to carry in your hand. We will meet at 9:30 on 9.28 in the Barrington train station parking lot. Can’t wait to see you there!
NEWS! Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
All of you are invited to a PTO informational meeting! This is just to talk about how we are restarting the PTO and what it looks like in the near future. Please come at 4:30pm today at Sunny Hill. Then, we will have our first official PTO meeting on September 30 at 6pm.
Drop off & Pick Up Safety
For the safety of all our students, please remember to pick up your child in the school parking lot. Parking across the street and having children cross can be dangerous, as our staff is unable to supervise street crossings. Let’s work together to keep our children safe! Thank you for your cooperation.
Healthy Living: Dental Hygiene
A healthy smile starts at home! As parents, you play a crucial role in your child's oral health. By teaching them about proper dental hygiene habits at a young age, you can help prevent cavities, gum disease and other dental problems.
Why Is Teeth Cleaning Important?
Brushing and flossing prevents the buildup of plaque. Plaque is a clear, sticky material made up of bacteria (germs). It can build up and lead to:
- Cavities. A cavity is a hole in a tooth that, without treatment, can grow bigger and deeper.
- Gum disease. This irritation of the gums happens when plaque is left on the teeth. Over time, gum disease can lead to sore, bleeding gums, and even tooth loss.
What’s the Right Way to Brush Teeth?
A child should brush their teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day. Here are some tips on how to brush:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. Gently brush in short circular strokes.
- Brush all outside and inside areas of your teeth, and the chewing surfaces. You can also gently brush your tongue.
- Use a timer or play a favorite song while brushing your teeth to get your child used to brushing for a full 2 to 3 minutes.
What About Flossing?
A child should be flossing at least once a day. Brushing is important but it won't remove the plaque and particles of food between your teeth and near the gumline.

Additional Tips:
- Visit the dentist at least every 6 months to help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems.
- Limit sugar-sweetened beverages like soda, juice drinks, sports drinks, and flavored milks and sugary snacks. If your child does have these, serve at mealtimes, and have them brush their teeth after.
Remember, a healthy smile is a happy smile. By following these tips, you can help your child develop lifelong healthy habits.
RESPECT: Have you talked to your student about respect? During the entire month of September, we will focus on respect. :)
7:30pm "Bath, Books, and Bed"!
It is time to get back into those summer routines! Please develop a home routine that prioritizes learning. Bathing, then reading (at least 20 minutes a day), and then bed time is one great routine. Experts recommend 9-12 hours of sleep for elementary aged students.
