Dear Families and Students,
As always we hope everyone had another great week! This week's newsletter is filled with my exciting recaps and reminders!
Our 2019 Teacher Appreciation Week is quickly approaching! In this week's newsletter, you will find details regarding our TA Spirit Week and Teacher Appreciation Week. Wednesday, April 17th. 2019 will be the last day to purchase your TA Spirit Week Passes, the link may be found below. Our Teacher Appreciation Week donation list can also be found in this week's newsletter, help us show our teachers how much we appreciate them!
We would like to take this time to congratulate Trey C. on being selected to perform in the World Competition for Percussion! Great job, Trey! We would also like to congratulate our Lynx Lane Students of the Month and Commendation Winners for the month of March!
On Saturday, April 6th, 2019 our Model UN Team participated at FMSMUN St. Petersburg 6! Congratulations to these Orcas on a job well done and their accomplishments!
8th Grade Orcas as a reminder slide show photos are due to Mrs.Braxton by Friday, April 19th, 2019 and the last day to complete the Graduation Early Departure Form is Thursday, May 23rd, 2019. All of your graduation details can be found in this week's newsletter along with the High School Course Selection link!
Our 4th Quarter Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on Tuesday, April 30th, Wednesday, May 1st, Wednesday, May 8th and Thursday, May, 9th 2019 from 4:30-6: 30 PM. You may begin signing up for a time slot on Saturday, April 20th, 2019 at 7 PM. We ask that you review all the information found in the link below before this date and time.

OSS Orca Advances to World Percussion Competition !
We are pleased to announce that 7th Grader Trey C will be heading to World competition for percussion! Trey was selected to play a part as a young "ringmaster" with an adult/high school group Infinity at the competition. Trey was selected to advance to the world competition for his performance in the "The Greatest Showman" production. Congratulations Trey we are so proud of you and good luck!
Lynx Lane Orcas Awarded at FMSMUN Conference
On Saturday, the OSS Model United Nations team traveled to Pinellas Preparatory Academy in Largo to participate in FMSMUN St. Petersburg 6. The conference teaches middle school students about the UN System along with the challenges facing the international community in a friendly, academic manner. Congratulations to the following students for a job well done - Scarlett S., Alex M., Mehlika A., Rami F., Evan A., Aleena A., Hayden R., Atreya M., Ricardo F., Emily D., Nicole S., Noor K., and Glen W. We're delighted and tremendously proud our young delegates managed to win three Best Delegate awards out of four overall committees, along with a Most Improved award. Congratulations to Aleena A. for winning Best Delegate in the World Health committee session, Mehlika A. for winning Best Delegate in the Security Council, Nicole S. for winning Best Delegate in the General Assembly First Committee and to Rami F. for winning Most Improved in the General Assembly First Committee.

We would like to congratulate the ORCAS Character Award Student winners for the month of March! These five students were nominated from their departments within the following categories below. Each student received a Character medal, certificate, and a dress down day.
O-"Outreach towards community"-Adrian T.
Adrian T was nominated by the Language Arts Department for his acts of kindness and for his positive attitude. He is a very humble person and never fails to congratulate someone for a job well done. He is always seen giving out a hand to those that need help especially in the hallways.
R-"Respect and compassion for all"-Nidhiya J
Nidhiya J was nominated by the social studies department for always shows respect for her teachers, classmates, and friends. She is always so friendly and is always willing to help a fellow ORCA, especially in times of need. She is usually the mediator in conflicts between her classmates and friends.
Science
C-"Celebrate Diversity"-Jalissa R
Jalissa R was nominated by the math department for an all-around “people person”. She is active in the classroom and interacts with all of her friends and classmates on a daily basis. She is quick to make new friends and enjoys the company of others.
A-"Advocate for a safe learning environment"-Nyah P
Nyah P was nominated by the connections department for always mindful about the things happening around her. If she sees something that is not safe, she doesn't hesitate to inform an adult.
S-“Strive for Excellence within a Stimulating Environment"-Jana Z
Jana Z was nominated by the Science Department for an exemplary student who always endeavors her best to be successful in her classes. She has a great connection with her teachers and peers. Jana works collaboratively with her classmates and helps create a fascinating learning environment for everyone.

Attention 8th Grade Orcas: Submit your 2019-20 School Year Course Preference
Take time to carefully select possible courses in the order of your preference. Due to class size restrictions, prerequisites and your academic readiness, you may not be assigned the classes you requested. Sometimes, your last choice is the only option that will work when creating a schedule. Therefore, please complete all of the course categories including the contingency (back-up) course offerings. We will try our best to accommodate your requests. All final placement decisions will be made by the administration and guidance departments after reviewing students' end of year grades and test scores.
If you are not satisfied with your schedule or have different needs, please do not hesitate to email Mr. I until the end of the first two weeks of the new school year. Students should check their high school graduation requirements from the Florida Department of Education's website.

2018-19 Lynx Lane Assessment Calendar
Below you will find the 2018-2019 Lynx Lane Assesment Calendar, please keep these dates in mind when planning any upcoming appointments and vacations. It is also important to note that on the following days listed below we will not be holding our regular early release schedule, instead, we will follow our standard release schedule to allow more time for testing.

Moving Across Literacy Challenge
The Moving Across Literacy Challenge for the 2018-2019 School Year is officially underway! Each number listed below the grade level is the number of book slips grade level students have submitted that they read! For every 25th Book Slip submitted that student will win a small prize. 8th Grade Graduation Event, Slideshow and Early Departure Information
Graduation Information
The Orlando Science 2019 8th Graduation will take place on Friday, May 24th, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport(9300 Jeff Fuqua Boulevard, Orlando Fl 32827) from 6:30-8:00 PM.
Parking: $4 Self Park/$7 Valet Park
8th Grade Orcas must arrive at the Hyatt between 5:15-5: 30 PM. Caps, gowns, and tassels must be worn upon arrival.
Proper Dress Code is required for ALL 8th Grade Orcas, please refer to the dress code handout that was emailed home to all 8th Grade Parents/Guardians.
Guests may arrive between 5:15-6: 30 PM and may begin seating at 5:30 PM, we ask that you limit only four(4) guests per student due to limited seating.
8th Grade Slideshow Requests
We will be creating a slideshow for the 2019 8th grade graduation. If you would like your student’s picture to be included in the slideshow please follow the directions below:

Email two pictures to Ms. Braxton by April 19th at 4pm to Mrs. Braxton.

- One current/recent picture
Please be advised slideshow participation is optional. Graduation attendance is not required to participate in the slideshow. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
8th Grade Graduation Early Departure
Graduation for your students will take place on Friday, May 24th, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport. We understand that this is typically a busy day for our 8th-grade families as they prepare for graduation, so for May 24th only we will allow early departure from school. In order for ED to take place, you must have the form completed below by 3 PM Thursday, May 23rd, 2018. We will not be accepting any responses after this date. If a response is not submitted your student will be picked up during our regular dismissal time frame. Please keep in mind students must be picked up from the dismissal area beginning from 12:00PM-12: 30 PM. Please note by signing your student up you are agreeing to pick them up in the dismissal area between 12:00 and 12:30 pm if you do not pick your student up at this time you will have to wait until dismissal.No 8th grade student will be permitted to leave through the front office on this day. The OCLS has partnered with OSS Middle/High to provide free Virtual Library Cards (VLC) to all students. There are many wonderful online resources students can use from any computer with their credentials. 2018-2019 Lynx Lane Birthday Dress Down Form
Orcas this is just a reminder that students interested in dressing down for their birthday must submit a "Birthday Dress Down Day" form found below two days prior to their birthday dress down day request. If a form is submitted less than the two days or is not submitted they will be considered out of dress code and they will not be approved to dress down.

The monies received go to supporting our academic and sport teams, the PLTW (Project Lead the Way) along with many other OSS programs and classroom needs. Annual OSS Band Video Game Tournament
The Lynx Lane Band Program is sponsoring its annual video game night on April 19th from 5-9 pm. Lynx Lane and Technology Drive 6th Grade students are invited to participate and play a variety of video games with their classmates to see who really is the top player. Wristbands for entry will be on sale at the front desk for $5.00 from Monday, April 15th through Thursday, April 18th. The price will increase on Friday, April 19th to $7.00. Concessions will also be on sale, including pizza, snacks, candy, and drinks. We hope that you can come out and join us for a night of fun!
