Our District has a strong partnership with the Strongsville Police Department. Recently, Mr. Jancar has invited different officers and units of the SPD to visit with students in our high school’s Career Exploration Program to provide insight into law enforcement careers. Congratulations to the 23 SHS students recently inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) at Polaris. These students were recognized for achievements at the Polaris main campus in Middleburg Hts., as well as Project Lead the Way (PLTW) satellite programs at the high school. This year, there were 97 total inductees from the six local partner schools of Polaris. Fewer than two percent of America's secondary students are nominated for membership into this prestigious organization.

Join Mr. Jenkins' SHS Advanced Theatre class as they perform the one-act play, “Order Up!” - a broad comedy set in a fast food restaurant. Anyone who has worked in customer service or has been to a restaurant is sure to enjoy and find the humor of this play. The one-night performance is TONIGHT (Friday, 4/26) at 7pm in the SHS Main Auditorium. Admission is free (although donations will be accepted).

Earlier this week, Dr. Cameron Ryba (SCS Superintendent) was invited to present to Ohio’s Senate Education Committee about the academic efforts of our District to address student growth following the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Ryba joined other Superintendents from around the state in updating the Committee on continuing programs which meet the needs of our students. Parents and other interested members of the public are invited to participate in a virtual meeting on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 3:00pm - 4:00pm to discuss the use of Special Education Funds within the Strongsville District, namely the Federally Funded Individuals with Disability Education Act, Part B. At all times throughout the school year, but especially as we move into the spring months, we want to ensure all of our students that ride the bus have a safe and enjoyable experience. If your child rides a bus, please click HERE to watch a bus safety video we have put together. This covers bus safety from getting picked up at the bus stop, the ride to / from school, and getting dropped back off in the afternoon. By following the guidelines outlined in the video, we can make sure all of our students get to and from school safely.

Best of luck to SHS Seniors Colin Lofgren and Anthony Petito, as they will be competing in the National SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta, GA in late June. Colin and Anthony, represented Polaris and SHS as they joined hundreds of other students from across the state showcasing their skills and abilities in specific career-technical training areas.

Colin, a Precision CNC Machining senior, finished first in CNC Milling. In this competition, students are evaluated on their ability to independently plan and program jobs for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) turning centers and provide instructions for operators to execute. Competitors program parts and generate code using CAM software, troubleshoot programming errors, interpret prints, measure/gauge parts and demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of CNC turning center configuration, setup and operation.

Anthony, a Polaris Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration senior, also took first in his event, Sheet Metal. In this challenge, competitors are evaluated on their ability to connect sheet metal pieces with drive cleats, spot welding and riveting. Skills tested may include, but are not limited to, straight duct, transition fitting and 45-degree entry tap fitting. Professional sheet metal workers judge competitors on their use of hand tools, correctness of layout and shop safety procedures. Competitors are judged on their accuracy, completeness and craftsmanship.

Shout out to Strongsville High School and Polaris (EMT/Fire Training) seniors Julia Welsh and Lynda Stricko, who both placed third in the EMT state competition.

Don't miss this year's “Teen Idol” singing competition TOMORROW (Saturday, 4/27) at 7pm in the SHS Auditorium. Based on the hit TV show, this competition also features local judges choosing the next winner in this annual event. Who will be voted this year's Teen Idol? Tickets will be available at the door for only $5!

Ms. McKenna Coyle has been teaching kindergarten at Surrarrer Elementary for four years. Ms. Coyle has visualized her career for a while. “I dreamed of being a teacher since I was six years old and I cannot imagine doing anything else!” Ms. Coyle earned her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education from Baldwin Wallace University and also has a Masters Degree in Reading from Bowling Green State University.

“Working with our students is an incredibly rewarding experience. What I like best is the opportunity to build positive relationships and lifelong memories not only with the children but also with their families. Every day comes with its unique moments. Teaching kindergarten is both challenging and exciting! The best part is witnessing the kids realize their potential and seeing them reach their goals. I especially cherish the ability to provide love, support, and create a sense of family within my classroom.”

Academic Challenge has returned this year as a student opportunity at SHS. Byron Bender, Carter Estrela, and Chloe Mance - and alternates Caleb Baker and Nathan Baker - are members of the team, who have been training throughout the year to compete in this legendary local trivia show. Don’t miss the Strongsville High School “Academic Challenge” team compete against Madison High School and Nordonia High School TOMORROW (Saturday, 4/27) at 11:30am. The “Academic Challenge” episode airs on WEWS Channel 5. After April 27, the episode featuring Strongsville will also be available HERE. Special thanks to Mr. Scott, Math teacher at SHS, who serves as the advisor for Academic Challenge.

As part of the Town Center project, construction has started on a roundabout that will replace the three-way stop where Zverina Lane, Westwood Drive, and Roe Lane meet near the library. All buildings in the area will still be easily accessible, but will only be accessed from one entrance. Please note that during this construction (expected to last about three months):

+ The Communications Center, Historical Village, and Strongsville Food Bank will be reachable from Zverina Lane (access from Pearl Road - across from SMS)

+ The Police Station, City Council Chambers, Mayor's Court, and Strongsville Library will be accessible from Westwood Drive (access from Pearl Road)

+ The Recreation and Senior Center will be accessible from Royalton Road, using the entrance to the Greens of Strongsville shopping center

+ The walkway from Pearl Road (across from SMS) to the Library and Rec Center will be closed throughout this construction period - SMS students will NOT be able to walk past the Communications Center/Food Bank to get to the Library or Rec Center

+ The paper and plastic recycling bins that are normally outside the Strongsville Food Bank have been moved to the Rec Center parking lot

Four Strongsville High School students recently competed and finished in top spots in two different business challenges:

Richie Laneve won the InvestTalk Market Madness bracket challenge. The competition is similar to the NCAA ‘March Madness’ college basketball brackets, but with stocks. Richie had the most correct bracket by choosing which stocks would outperform in each of the bracket matchups. This national competition was run by an investment firm in California. Richie won a $1,000 cash prize.

Business Club and DECA students Madelyn Adkins, Jackson Griffin, and Justin Hughes competed in the Baldwin Wallace Accounting Case Study. The students were tasked with solving real world accounting issues and presented their solutions to both BW Accounting Professors and CPA Accountants. Madelyn, Jackson, and Justin took 2nd place out of 8 local high school teams and each won a $25 target gift card!

"Here Comes The Bus" is an app for SCS families to track busing information and routes for their student(s), as well as real-time notifications.

The app and complementary website (www.herecomesthebus.com) - available on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, or personal computer - enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus on its daily route.

Download the "Here Comes the Bus" app to monitor daily transportation information. Families that utilized the app last year will need to delete last year’s student information and add their current year information in order to receive the latest routing details and updates. Summer Swim Team Signups

Calling all swimmers! It’s time for summer swim team signups! If your child enjoys swimming and wants to be part of a fun team this summer, check out your development or rec center pool for swim team information. Strongsville is one of the few communities that has summer swim league. Kids get to enjoy a fun and laid back competitive experience. Practices start 5/28 - and the first swim meet is 6/13. Each team will have 7 swim meets - on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no meets the week of July 4th. Season ends with a city wide meet at the rec center on July 20th. Kids 5-18 are welcome to join. Kids must be able to swim across a pool unassisted. The Strongsville Swim League is restricted to Strongsville residents only.
