Family update video 4-11-25

Dear Families,

We continue to have such wonderful weeks at Wickliffe, filled with learning, growth, and joy. Thank you to all the families who joined us for the Art Show last week—it was a beautiful reminder of the many ways we stay connected as a community.

As I mentioned in my update last week, we are looking forward to bringing our community together to begin collaborating with families on new ways we can ensure multi-age and multi-year experiences for our students. We recognize that this shift impacts each of our students and families in unique ways, and we want to create meaningful opportunities for all of us to connect around how we can best support our students and their learning experiences at school. Our staff has been part of this journey along the way and continue to support all students with care, intention, and thoughtful, loving conversations.

Please consider joining us at Wickliffe on Wednesday, April 23 from 6:30-7:30. We want to have a dialogue and provide updates on curriculum resource changes and the progressive program review that is meant to clarify, strengthen and synchronize the work happening at both Wickliffe and Barrington. Following those updates, we will engage parents and guardians in a process of collaborative ideation around mixed-age experiences.

As always, thank you for your trust, care, and partnership. Below are a few reminders for this week:

  • 5th Grade Families: Deadline to submit forms for open enrollment to your non-residential middle school is Tuesday, April 15
  • April 14-15: 4/5 Math State Testing
  • See the PTO Updates section for Wickapalooza information!!

Warmly,
Angela Evans

You Belong UA District Family Book Read

This spring, the district is offering a family engagement opportunity through the You Belong UA Family Book Read. Safety Education Information Safety Education Information

See information below on Upcoming Safety Lessons in April. Have a great Spring Break!

Dear Wickliffe families,

As noted in the recent district update, Upper Arlington elementary school counselors will be delivering classroom lessons in April on how to stay safe and speak up, in compliance with the annual requirement of Senate Bill 288. In addition to the district-approved Second Step curriculum, we will also be using the books Your Body Belongs to You by Cornelia Spelman and No Means No by Jayneen Sanders.

Below is a brief overview of the general topics that will be covered during these lessons:

  • Safe and Unsafe/Unwanted touches:

    • Safe touches are positive and caring, while unsafe/unwanted touches hurt your body or make you feel uncomfortable

    • How to say no assertively to unwanted touches

    • The Touching Rule: No one should touch your private body parts

  • Intuition:

    • Use your intuition to recognize unsafe and unwanted touches

  • Reporting to an adult:

    • How to tell a trusted adult if unwanted touches happen

    • Identify caring adults to talk to about unwanted behaviors

    • Demonstrate how to report to an adult

After the lesson, please look for a detailed letter sent home with your child. This letter will provide talking points, suggested questions to ask your child, and additional resources to continue this important conversation at home.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to partnering with you to teach your child about staying SAFE, STRONG, AND FREE.

Best regards,

Kaitlyn Karam

SB 234 - Suicide/crisis lifeline information in schools

Effective April 9, Ohio law requires public school districts serving students in any grade 9 through 12 to include the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline telephone number on all of the following, if provided or used by the school:

  • Student identification cards issued after April 9

  • Planners issued to students after April 9

  • Any electronic portal administered by the district or school that may be accessed by students

Upper Arlington Schools students in grades 9-12 and staff will now see information on the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline on their devices, in several portals and our website. iPads have a WebApp that links to the 988 Lifeline website. The weblink is also located in Classlink for grade 9-12 students and staff. PowerSchool now has a 988 icon beside the student name in the student and parent portals. When clicked, it provides more information. The information can also be found on our website. Next year, the information will also be printed on student IDs for students in grades 9-12, in accordance with the law.

Counted Out: The importance of math education in today’s world

Join us for a special screening of Counted Out, a documentary by Vicki Abeles that explores the impact of math education on students' opportunities and our shared future. Through personal stories and expert insights, the film highlights the importance of mathematical literacy in today’s world. For more information, please watch the Counted Out trailer.

The screening will take place on Thursday, April 24th, at 7:00 PM at the Upper Arlington High School Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, but registration is required—sign up here. The screening of the film will also be followed by a short community discussion.

Nurse Notes

Any prescription medication administered at school requires written authorization from the student’s physician as well as written parental permission. Per Ohio Revised Code, the Prescribed Medication must be received by the health office in the container in which it was dispensed by the provider or pharmacist (we cannot accept medication in baggies). Medication authorization forms and other health forms can be found on the district website at: UA Health Forms. Should you have any questions, please contact the Wickliffe Health Office at 614-487-5150.

Our health clinics track communicable illnesses and work with local public health agencies to mitigate potential outbreaks.
