From the Principal's Office
Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!
My name is Makaela Manning, and I am the principal of Dr. George Washington Carver Academic Elementary School. We are so excited to begin our new school year here at Carver for the 2024-2025 School Year, as this promises to be a full and robust year ahead!
This letter contains very helpful information regarding our first days and week of school!
We are looking forward to seeing you bright and early on Monday, August 19, 2024!
Warmly,
Principal Manning

First Day is August 19, 2024
Carver's Big First Day is on Monday, August 19, 2024 at 8:15 AM.
During our celebration, we will have our red carpet laid out for our scholars, as well as music, and a beautiful balloon arc for photos! Families are invited to attend the red carpet event to cheer and clap for students as they enter the building on our very first day!
Children will be led into the building by their teachers at 8:30am, and our morning session will begin with breakfast for students. Parents are invited to go downstairs to our cafeteria for a coffee reception and quick chat with the principal. We will be unable to invite families into the classrooms on the first day of school, as we have special routines and procedures that the students will participate in from day one, minute one!
TK families will be able to register for the TK AfterSchool program during the coffee reception, and Kindergarten through 5th grade families may register with Beacon. TK families will have the option of enrolling their child in the Leola Havard OST (Out of School Time) program. The program is located at the Leola Havard Campus, 1520 Oakdale Street, two blocks away from Carver School. TK students who register for Leola Havard OST will be escorted daily to the program by walking with an SFUSD staff member.
Please note: Beacon registration does not roll over year to year. Students must be re-registered by their parent/guardian every year before they are able to participate in the Beacon afterschool program.
The first day of school is a full day. Instruction begins at 8:40am, and ends at 2:55pm. Students will be offered breakfast and lunch every day. Students may bring a lunch from home if he/she prefers. We will send home details this week regarding Carver's Healthy Food policy and which items may not be brought to school for lunch (sodas, any drinks in glass bottles, candy, any peanut products, etc).
Uniforms
Carver's uniform consists of navy blue pants, walking shorts, skirt, or skort as well as a white polo or collared shirt. Students may wear a jacket or sweater is class, but will be asked to remove hoods while in the building.
Students may wear their shoe of choice. Please, no Crocs, sandals, open-toed shoes. This is for student safety reasons.
First Day Parking
If families wish to join us for the first day of school festivities, please note: only street parking will be available.
The corner of Oakdale and Keith streets will closed to traffic every day from 8:00-8:40 pm, with the exception of Pre-K and TK families. PK and TK families will receive a placard for their car to show our security personnel so that you may drive through to our parking lot.
We ask for PK families to drive all the way down to the lower yard for drop off into the Leola Havard PK program.
TK families may park in the upper parking lot, for drop off.
Please be mindful of your speed while in the school zone. Our children's safety is our first priority. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.
Our Team
If you have not heard from your child's teacher (or guest teacher), you will likely receive a call, email, or text this weekend! Please help me welcome the Carver Team back for the 24-25 school year!
