A Note to our Parents
Dear D91 Families
We are nearing the end of the school year and once again find ourselves celebrating a year of growth, development, maturity, and change.
As we wind down the year, we extend our most sincere congratulations to the eighth grade students. Later this month, the school community will bid them a fond farewell with wishes for success as they move on to academic and extracurricular opportunities in high school. It has been a wonderful journey and we are proud of their accomplishments.
Our third grade students are also marking a milestone as they prepare to leave their elementary experience at Milne Grove and join the intermediate hallway at Kelvin Grove. During the month of May, they will be participating in step up and celebratory activities aimed at preparing them for the transition ahead as well as honoring all the growth and learning they have achieved.
Our staff has already begun preparing for the upcoming school year and we ask all families to register their children as soon as possible. Your quick action helps us tremendously as we plan class sizes and staffing over the summer. For families that are relocating and leaving the district, please send us a word indicating your plans, so we can provide a records release form.
As the weather changes and the glory of spring unfolds in full, we hope your families close this school year by participating in one of the many activities planned for the final weeks of school. Our Hornet community is built through your participation, and we hope to see you at the PTO Family Field Day, D91 Foundation 5K Fun Run/Walk, or D91 Slammers Night.
Respectfully and with gratitude,
Mr. John Jennings, Kelvin Grove Principal

Mrs. Jaime Koziol, Milne Grove Principal

Registration for the 24-25 School Year is now open!
Returning and New Student Early Bird Registration (through May 30):
Click here to log in to Infinite Campus and complete your child(ren)'s registration for next year! With our streamlined process, most families are done in 10 minutes or less.
Returning student registration runs through May 30th. Families that complete their registration and pay in full or make the first payment of an installment plan by May 30th at 6pm will enjoy the early bird registration rate. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool again this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. On May 30th, the district will offer an in-person opportunity to finalize registrations; families can walk in at KG door 4 between 3:30-6pm to use a device, drop off documents, etc.
Kindergarten Registration:
Click here to join our mailing list and make sure you receive all the registration information and links for our full day kindergarten program. Please note that in order to register for the 24-25 school year, students need to be at least 5 years old on or before September 1, 2024.
In order to be complete, registrations must include a completed electronic registration, the child's birth certificate, guardian's driver's license, and notarized custody form. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. Health documents are required prior to the start of school in August. For program information, please contact the school principal, Mrs. Koziol at jkoziol@d91.net. The D91 Boundary Map is included for your reference below.
Returning & New Student Regular Registration (May 31 - July 18):
On May 31st, the regular registration window begins and the early bird registration rate will no longer be available. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool again this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. Families that need in person service and registration assistance are invited to attend one of the two drop in dates at Kelvin Grove Door 4, June 13th from 3 - 6pm & July 18th between 8am-10am or 4pm-6pm. The registrar will be on hand to answer questions about residency documents and receive forms. Devices will also be available for those who do not have access to technology. Families may also request a 1:1 registration appointment by emailing cdragosh@d91.net. Having accurate registration numbers as early as possible is essential to assigning classroom placements and finalizing staffing assignments; your cooperation in registering in a timely manner is appreciated.
Late Registration (July 19 & beyond):
Late registration begins on July 19th. Students registering during this timeframe may not receive their schedule/class assignment on time.
Notes from the Health Offices
We have enjoyed helping to care for the health needs of your children this year. There are many things to think about as we approach the end of the school year. Here are just a few reminders:
End of the Year Health Office Reminders
End of School Year Medication Pick-up: Please pick up ALL medications from the school health office by the end of the school day on May, 24, 2024. Please feel free to pick up the medications beginning on Monday, May 20, 2024 IF the medication is not a daily medication. Please come to the front office and give your student’s name to the receptionist and either she or the nurse will bring the medications out to you. If the medication is not picked up from the health office by the end of the school day on Friday, May 24, 2024 and prior arrangements have not been made for alternate pick-up, the medication will be considered abandoned. Abandoned medications will be destroyed in accordance with local, state and federal laws. We will NOT keep any medications in the health office over the summer.
New Health Forms/Meds for the 2024-2025 School Year: With each new school year, it is necessary to update your child’s necessary health forms in the health office.
Physical Examination/Immunizations: All children entering kindergarten, sixth grade, and any children registering from an out of state school or entering an Illinois school for the first time must have an Illinois physical completed (within the last 12 months of the start of school) including all components of the physical and required immunizations. We ask that the Health Examination form be turned in prior to the start of school in order to avoid the school exclusion date of October 15, 2024 as described in the school code of Illinois.
Sports Physical: All student athletes are required to have a sports physical on file in the office BEFORE trying out for a school sports team. Physicals performed for sixth grade are acceptable for sports physicals if the appropriate box is marked on the bottom of the page. Sports physicals are valid for one year from the date of physical.
Eye Examination: Eye examinations are required for all students in Kindergarten or entering an Illinois school for the first time. The exam must be completed within one year before the start of school. Completed forms must be sent to the school by October 15, 2024..
Dental Examination: A dental examination is required for all children entering kindergarten, second grade, and sixth grade by May 15, 2025. Dental exams must be dated within 18 months of the May 15 deadline.
Health Care Plans (Asthma, Allergies, Seizure, Etc.): All students with medical conditions, such as asthma, allergies, seizures, etc.) must submit new health care plans each school year. The forms must be completed, signed by both the parent and the physician, dated after 5/24/24, and turned in to the school nurse when school resumes in August. Per state law, medication/treatment forms signed by the healthcare provider and the parent/guardian, all supplies and a health care plan must be in place before the first day of school attendance.
If you plan to bring medications to the health office for the upcoming school year: You must complete a Medication Authorization Form for EACH medication turned into the health office. If the medicine is over the counter (OTC), only a parent’s signature is required. However, if it is a prescription medication the Medication Authorization Form also needs to be signed by a physician.
If you would like your student to carry emergency medication, such as an inhaler, epi-pen, or glucagon/diabetes supplies, the physician must indicate on both the Care Plan and the Self-Carry Medication Authorization Form that the student is trained and capable of carrying and self-administering the listed medication. If you consent to having your child self-carry, we require two containers of the medication, one is for the student to carry and one will be kept in the health office.
All necessary health forms can be found on the District 91 website (http://www.d91.net/) under the FORMS tab on the right hand side of the page. http://www.d91.net/forms.html
Summer Safety
Sun Safety:
Use Sunscreen: Experts recommend that all kids — no matter their skin tone — wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Whatever sunscreen you choose, make sure it's broad-spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) and, if kids are in or near water, is labeled water-resistant. Apply a generous amount and reapply often.
Avoid the Strongest Rays of the Day: Try to stay in the shade when the sun is at its strongest (usually from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the northern hemisphere). If kids are in the sun during this time, apply and reapply sunscreen — even if they're just playing in the backyard. Most sun damage happens during day-to-day activities because it's easy to overlook using sunscreen then. Remember that even on cloudy, cool, or overcast days, UV rays reach the earth. This "invisible sun" can cause unexpected sunburn and skin damage.
Cover Up: One of the best ways to protect skin is to cover up. To see if they offer enough protection, put your hand inside clothes to make sure you can't see it through them. Some clothes have an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) against the sun, so check the labels. For outdoor events, bring along a wide umbrella or a pop-up tent to play in. If it's not too hot outside and won't make kids even more uncomfortable, have them wear light long-sleeved shirts and/or long pants.
Wear Sunglasses: Sun exposure damages the eyes as well as the skin. Sun exposure over time can cause cataracts (clouding of the eye lens, which leads to blurred vision) later in life. The best way to protect eyes is to wear sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection.
Water Safety: Every day, an average of 11 people die in the U.S. from unintentional drowning — and one in five of those are children 14 or younger according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Red Cross wants everyone to know critical safety knowledge and skills that could save your life in and around the water. We encourage families to build confidence in the water by learning to be safe, making good choices, learning to swim and how to handle emergencies.
Preventing unsupervised access to water, providing constant, active adult supervision and knowing how to swim are critical layers of protection to help prevent drowning.
Drowning behavior is typically fast and silent. Unless rescued, a drowning person will last only 20 to 60 seconds before submerging. A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes to reply to a text, check a fishing line or apply sunscreen.
In the event of an emergency, reach or throw an object to the person in trouble. Don't go in or you could become a victim yourself.
It’s best to swim in a lifeguarded area. Always designate a “water watcher” whose sole responsibility is to keep a close eye and constant attention on everyone in and around the water until the next water watcher takes over
Bicycle Safety:
Always wear a bicycle helmet.
Find a safe place to ride — younger children should ride on the sidewalk.
Follow the rules of the road when riding your bike in the street. Stay on the right side when riding your bike in the street. Obey street signs and traffic lights.
Stay off busy streets.
Look left, then right, then left again when crossing the street.
Watch for cars near driveways or alleys.
Never carry riders on your bike.
Never ride between cars.
Give pedestrians the right of way.
Make sure your bike has a headlight if you ride in the street at night.
Stay alert for unexpected obstacles.

Summer Success: The Power of Routine and Activity
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the summer break, it's essential to consider the importance and value of maintaining a routine for your child's well-being and development. While the summer months offer a break from the routine and activities of school, establishing a consistent schedule can provide structure and stability, contributing to your child's overall happiness and success.
Why Routine Matters
Sense of Security: Routine provides a sense of security and predictability for children, helping them feel safe and connected in their daily lives.
Time Management Skills: Following a routine teaches children time management skills, assisting them to prioritize tasks and manage their time effectively.
Healthy Habits: A structured routine encourages the development of healthy habits such as regular meal times, adequate sleep, and consistent exercise.
Things to Do at Home
Family Reading Time: Set aside time each day for the family to read together. Whether it's a chapter from a book or a bedtime story, reading together fosters a love for learning and strengthens family bonds.
Creative Projects: Encourage your child to explore their creativity through art projects, science experiments, or DIY crafts. Providing opportunities for hands-on learning and expression stimulates their imagination and problem-solving skills.
Outdoor Adventures: Spend time outdoors as a family, engaging in activities such as gardening, nature walks, or backyard picnics. Physical activity reduces stress, contributing to overall well-being.
The Importance of Being Active
Physical Health: Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining good health and preventing childhood obesity. Encourage your child to stay active by participating in outdoor games, sports, or recreational activities.
Mental Well-being: Exercise has been shown to have a variety of mental health benefits, including reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which improve mood and promote a sense of well-being.
Decreasing Tech Time
Balancing Screen Time: While technology has its benefits, excessive screen time can have negative effects on children's development. Set limits on screen time and encourage alternative activities such as reading, playing outside, or spending time with family and friends.
Enhancing Social Skills: Limiting screen time encourages children to interact with others face-to-face, assisting in the development of social skills such as communication, empathy, and cooperation. By incorporating a routine, promoting physical activity, and limiting screen time, you can create a summer environment that nurtures your child's growth and happiness.
Let's make this summer one filled with cherished memories, learning, and adventure!
