Maori Whakatauki & Macleans Values: Relating to Others
Often the smallest of words and acknowledgements, like saying 'hello' or 'thanks' can go a long way. Small words can be priceless!!
Ahakoa he iti he pounamu: Although it is small, it is a treasure
Relating to others is about relating well to a diverse range of people. This includes things like begin able to listen well, see different points of view, negotiate and share ideas. Relating to others involves knowledge as well as skills, for example, your child will learn how and why people are all different from each other. Teachers at Macleans Primary develop this key competency and Macleans Value by doing things like:
- Providing opportunities to work in different groups on tasks where different points of view can be heard, thought about, and acted on
- A group of children working on developing a product will need to think about the needs of a range of users
- In English, using a novel or short story that has characters from a different era or country, and encouraging the children to think about why different people think and behave as they do in the story

Macleans Primary School Community
Hello Everyone
I write this from the Auckland Principals Conference in Taupo. It is cold down here and and I am missing all things Macleans Primary! The Conference has gone well with a number of different speakers and professional learning opportunities for me that I will be able to share with the Macleans Primary team. The highlight so far for me has been listening to the Minister of Education Erica Stanford. Whether you are National or Labour, Green or Purple you would definitely be heartened by the current Government's vision for learning to make the New Zealand Education system the best in the World. The vision in action is most important, however, and Erica Stanford outlined the action well with an emphasis on the HOW we do it. In other words, the what is the NZ Curriculum, but how schools deliver will make the difference. Clear, easily understood next learning steps for the children, teachers and parents to implement, supported by an effective Local Curriculum, are a huge part of the how. Equity, hauora for all, resources, effective pedagogy, time and meaningful management & leadership, will make a difference to the child's progress. Hooray I say as I know all teachers at Macleans Primary are committed to achieve the Government's Vision for learning, as it is certainly Macleans Primary's vision!
The end of another week today at Macleans Primary means the beginning of a new week in a couple of days, and with that a four day week with the Matariki holiday on Friday 28 June. To celebrate Matariki, Macleans Primary is having our first school event in the refurbished hall on Thursday 27 June @ 2.15. More details on the Matariki Assembly below. As Friday is a public holiday there will be no hunger hut net week.
Enjoy this newsletter as it is full of all things Macleans Primary, from learning to sport and from culture to values.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Maori Hall Blessing: 10 June 2024
At the break of dawn on Monday 10 June, Macleans Primary staff and several students stood outside their new, refurbished hall as a Maori blessing was undertaken. The blessing started with a Karanga and prayer from the Owairoa Marae representatives Tani D., R. Minnhinick, J. Dobson and Hemi T. We all then walked the perimeter of the hall placing our hands on the building. In the staffroom, the visitors were thanked, paying tribute to their support for Macleans Primary, both in the past, present and the future. The Macleans Primary staff and students present thanked the visitors with a waiata. We all then shared some breakfast to complete the blessing ceremony.

Macleans Primary Kapa Haka Performance: Matarkiki in Howick, 15 June 2024
A Message to Our Kapa Haka Group From The Organisers of the Matariki Festival
I would just like to send our appreciation for the wonderful performance that Macleans Primary School Kapa Haka group provided as part of the Matariki Festival at the Howick Library on Saturday 15th June 2024 under the guidance of Rangiatea, Davinia, Hemi and other adult helpers. The children represented their school with pride, and we have received some lovely verbal feedback. Their performance was fantastic and heartwarming. Thank you again as we are aware of how much work it takes to prepare for a performance and the background work involved in transporting the children to the venue. We have posted a photo of the event on the Howick Library Facebook page and have blurred the children’s faces for privacy reasons. Many thanks to all of those involved.

Un-Packing The Macleans Local Curriculum: Turangawaewae
Tūrangawaewae is one of the most well-known and powerful Māori concepts. Literally tūranga (standing place), waewae (feet), it is often translated as 'a place to stand'. Tūrangawaewae are places where we feel especially empowered and connected. They are our foundation, our place in the world, our home. At Macleans Primary, we aim for each child to feel empowered and connected towards and within their learning. We also want all children to feel empowered and connected in their relationships with their peers and teachers.
