MPVA Weekly Update
February 5 - 9 ,2024
Dear Parents,
Last week we sent home your child's MAP growth report. If they have not presented it to you, please make sure to ask them for it. Attached below is a sample report. The report will define achievement versus growth and detail how your child did in both areas. We are also using the reports to guide our tutorials and the interventions that will be provided to students who need more time with their teachers. Our goal is to have every student grow and make progress regardless of their starting point. Working together, we can do this.
Last Friday we were honored to host the United States Navy Band for a "Music in the Schools" concert. It was truly outstanding. Our band directors, Mr. Orloske and Ms. Jordan, worked hand in hand with HSPVA band director, Connor Fetting, to bring this experience to our Greyhounds and also to the students we invited that are part of the Parker Elementary and Lovett Elementary school bands. We will be posting a link to the full video in this newsletter next week. You will not want to miss it!
Finally, I have to share an email that was sent to me after the concert:
Dear Sir,
My son is in the USN band and we attended the concert today. I just want to let you know we were so pleased with the good behavior of all the students that attended. My son made a comment that this was the best audience that he has played for. We especially enjoyed how the students actually sang along with a song. Great group of kids and thank you for letting us attend. Please pass this on to teachers and students.
Sincerely,
Jerry Morris
I could not agree more. Our kids displayed exemplary audience etiquette and made us all very proud. Mr. Orloske was also contacted by his contact in the Navy Band expressing the same sentiment and stated they want to come back to MPVA in 5 years when they go on this type of tour again. We could not have received a higher compliment than that!
Thank you all for your continued support of MPVA. Let's make this a great week!
Respectfully,
Mr. Sarabia
Academics are the mind of our school. Athletics are the heart of our school. Arts are the soul of our school. #WeAreMPVA
MPVA Updates
Visitors Window
Just a friendly reminder that, in an effort to avoid classroom disruptions, we kindly request that parents refrain from dropping off lunch, including outside food such as Chick-fil-A, McDonald's and etc. at the Visitor's Window during school hours. We encourage you to send your students with their lunches in the mornings or allow them to participate in the free HISD hot lunch provided in the cafeteria.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in creating a smooth learning environment.
Message From the Counselors
The counselors will be conducting a six-week group counseling session over stress management that provides students with relaxation and mindfulness techniques that help to reduce stress and anxiety.
This is a group counseling curriculum that school counselors utilize to help their students manage and reduce stress, especially stress stemming from current events. There are six 45 minute small group sessions which is aligned with The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Program.
If you are interested in your student taking advantage of this group therapy session, please complete the following information.

MPVA Mural Design Winner
We’re proud to announce the winner of the inaugural MPVA mural design competition! 7th grader Savannah Roundtree's beautiful design was selected by Mr. Sarabia as the winner, and we are so excited to see it come to life in front of our school. Savannah's artwork is both beautiful, suitable for a mural installation, and representative of the entire MPVA student body. Congratulations Savannah!
The mural installation will begin on February 10. The mural will be installed by the community, that means YOU! There are three walls in total and we will begin with the smallest wall. Below is a sign up genius where you can sign up your family to participate in the installation. Don't worry if you can't make it on the 10th or if the sign up fills up too quickly - we have two additional walls to paint at a later date!

HSPVA Guitar Program
We have exciting news for our parents and students interested in continuing to study in the field of the guitar - HSPVA is starting a guitar program! It will start very small (6 students, all 9th graders), and they will increase to around 18-24 total by adding 5 or 6 students each successive year.
Students will spend 3 hours on specific guitar instruction every other day, for four academic school years, and will be required to present adjudicated Senior Recitals, like any other music student.
Guitar instruction is one of the thriving District music areas in HISD and HSPVA is committed to continuing to support fine arts endeavors.
Audition requirements will be posted soon on the HSPVA website.
