November 18, 2024
We celebrated our 9th annual Veterans Day Celebration on Friday, November 8. We had the honor to perform on Tuesday, November 5th for the residents of Maple Lawn. Our students did an OUTSTANDING job and I could not have been more proud of them as I have been this past week.
We had approximately 80 veterans and their loved ones for the program at Jefferson. After our guests were greeted by the second grade students, they went into the cafeteria for refreshments as students were in there to help serve them. Our program was followed by a walk to the "Jefferson Wall of Honor" with third grade students cheering for our heroes.
There's no way to thank our veterans for everything they sacrifice for our freedom. Veterans Day is a good time to remember that our freedom isn't guaranteed. It's protected by men and women in our Armed Services. We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. In reality, we can never thank our veterans enough for their service. All we can do is show them the gratitude we all feel. I hope our veterans felt that gratitude.
Our third grade students along with Ms. Thompson, worked hard to prepare for "We Honor Our Veterans" music program. It was amazing to see all their musical talents. Everyone enjoyed their show.
My door is open, and I welcome comments, concerns, and questions.
Mrs. Reardon

Second Grade
Miss Conner's class enjoyed visiting with students from The Branch Area Career Center. The students brought some animals from the Career Center and spoke with Miss Conner's class about the opportunities available at the Career Center.
Third Grade
Third grade students have had an eventful month! They had the wonderful opportunity to show their gratitude towards our Veterans. Third graders performed at Maple Lawn, they performed for their parents, and they performed at a special Veteran's day program for approximately 80 veterans and their loved ones for the program. Students did a fantastic job!
Veteran's Day Celebration Event
Celebrating our Heroes!
Coldwater American Legion Post 52 Color Guard raised the flag before the Veteran's Day program. American Legion Color Guard member Jerry Ford played taps to honor fallen military as part of the ceremony. We had about eighty people present for the Annual Veterans Day celebration. Our staff all takes part in the celebration in one way or another. Our students had the opportunity to go to Maple Lawn prior to perform for those veterans.
Honoring Sheriff Pollack
We would like to take a moment to honor a man who has dedicated his life to public service and has been respected in our community for years. Many accomplishments mark Sheriff Pollack's career, but one of his greatest contributions was overseeing the construction of a new jail for Branch County. This legacy will serve the community for years. John has always made time to give back to his community, particularly its youth, outside of his formal duties. Whether he was visiting schools, reading to students, having lunch with them, or organizing special events like "Shop with a Cop" at Christmas and the "Adopt a Cop" program at Jefferson Elementary for second-grade students. Sheriff Pollack has show the importance of connection, trust, and care.
Thank you for your bravery, for your years of service, and for the example you set. As you move into retirement, know that the gratitude we feel today will carry forward in this community. We honor you and wish you all the best in the next chapter of a life so well-lived.

Handling Conflict.
Kids who know how to manage conflict are happier, have healthy friendships and learn better at school. How well kids are able to resolve conflict is related to their age, stage of development and life experiences. We’ve got some tips to help you support your child at any age to become better at managing and resolving conflicts with others.
Here’s how you can help your child handle conflict better: Be a positive role model – Kids learn about resolving conflict by observing others. Create a safe environment – Allow them to express themselves openly and honestly without fear of a negative or emotional reaction. Teach them strategies to calm down – Such as deep breathing, relaxation, exercise, writing, drawing, painting or other expressive activities. Work out how they feel – Talk it over to help them identify and process their feelings. Help them manage their feelings – Help your child find ways to manage their feelings in the moment such as counting to 10 or walking away.
Here are some skills that can help your child communicate more effectively during a conflict: 1). Using "I" statements to express feelings - “I feel ____ when ______.” 2). Talking about the problem openly and directly with the other person. 3). Listening carefully to others – making eye contact, no interrupting. 4). Avoiding name calling, hurtful words or acting on emotions

Music
2nd Grade Music
Autumn is here!!! We have been celebrating autumn in the 2nd grade music classes. We have moved to Vivaldi’s Autumn using scarves, practiced our rhythm reading with rhythm sticks and have gone looking for pumpkins in the pumpkin patch. We are finishing up our autumn celebration by playing classroom instruments to the song Autumn is Here.
3rd Grade Music
The 3rd Grade has been actively rehearsing our patriotic music for our performances that celebrate veterans! We really enjoyed performing for the residents of Maple Lawn Medical Care facility on November 5, our Veterans on November 8, and finally for our families and friends also on November 8. We hope you enjoyed watching, listening and celebrating with us!
Gym
It's crazy to think that Thanksgiving is coming so quickly. We've had some pretty fun days in P.E., make sure and ask your students what we've been doing. They all seem very excited to come to P.E. and play quite hard. Michigan winter is coming quickly, please make sure that your students have shoes they can wear in the gym. I don't want them to miss out on their P.E. time for any reason.
Art
In Art Class we have been focusing on Autumn and noticing the world around us. Making kids more aware of their environment fosters creative thinking and adds a level of safety to their lives. Noticing objects, surroundings and people among us will get our focus off ourselves and onto what is happening around us. In a society where screens are king, we need to foster natural curiosity and self awareness. Ask your child what they noticed at school today? In the lunchroom, classroom, playground, etc. This can be a great conversation starter and help our kids see what is going on around them.

Caring Cardinals
Cardinal 200 Club
We rolled out our Cardinal 200 Club. A big thank you to Paige Hodge and three of her students (Rowan Blount, Elliott Frederick, and Gracelyn Snodgrass) for creating a video to learn about the CARDINAL 200 CLUB.
We appreciate all of the families that complete the parent survey at conferences. Overall, the results were very positive and encouraging for our staff. We are looking at feedback for areas of improvement and have already been able to make adjustments. Based on some results, we are working closely with transportation in order to ensure that all students are arriving to school on time and safely leaving school at the end of the day.
We look forward to providing more opportunities for feedback from families. If you have any suggestions on how to reach more families, please let us know.
Pumpkin Run
Thank you!
We would like to say thank you to Randy and Julie Hasten from Quincy, who graciously donated pumpkins for our Pumpkin Run. Your support was crucial in making our pumpkin run a great success!
Math Tips
The holiday season is upon us, and this is often a time where we do a lot of shopping. Whether we are shopping for gifts, food for hosting family get-togethers, or just shopping for our everyday needs, we often need to stick to a budget. Next time you go shopping, share this budget with your child and have them use their addition, subtraction, and comparison skills to see if they can stay within their budget. For example, you may need to buy 3 bags of rolls that cost $6.00 each. Ask your child “How much would the rolls cost altogether?”. Another example might be, you set aside $20.00 for your child to spend on a gift for their sibling. They may choose an item they would like to buy for $35.00, ask them “Does that fit in your budget?”. Perhaps they want to purchase an item for $13.00 and one for $5.00. Ask “How much these items would cost and how much money they would have left to spend?” This is a great opportunity for kids to see how they can use math in a real life context.

Talk each day with your child about his/her activities. Promote literacy by reading to your child and by reading yourself. Limit and monitor TV watching, gaming, social media and computer time. Express high expectations and standards for your child's learning.
Address Changes in Skyward
This is the process for changing addresses in Skyward:
- The parent needs to log in to their Skyward account and request the address change. Once you have done that, an email will automatically be sent to our Administrative Service Center, letting them know of the request to change the address.
- You will then need to turn in "proof of residency" - - that shows your name and current address. It could be a copy of a lease or mortgage, a copy of a utility bill, insurance bill, etc. You can turn that in either to Julie Fitch at the Administrative Service Center, or to the Jefferson office.
- Once we have the Proof of Residency, Julie Fitch will complete the address change in Skyward.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Julie Fitch at our Administrative Service Center at 517-279-5910, or the Jefferson office at 517-279-5970,
Happy Thanksgiving!
