December 2021
A message from Career Academy Principal, Katie Towler
It is difficult to believe that we are already into December; the end of first semester is on the horizon. Please remind your students to finish strong. If you have questions about grades or attendance, please do not hesitate to reach out.
We have a special event planned for the month of December and you are invited! On Tuesday, December 7th we will be hosting an open house at the Career Academy, 627 4th St, from 6-7:30pm. Teachers and business partners will be on site to help answer questions about our courses and to share general information about what we do at the Career Academy. Please join us for a light dinner and a tour that evening. If you know others who would be interested, feel free to share the invitation.
Thank you,
Katie Towler

NWC INNOVATE Business Solutions Competition Results
On Friday, November 19th, 45 students from Northwest Iowa attended Northwestern College Business & Economics’ INNOVATE Business Solutions competition. Teams consisted of 4-5 students from the various schools in attendance (Sioux City Career Academy, Gehlen Catholic, HMS, Sioux Center, Spencer, Unity Christian, and Western Christian) and were tasked with creating a proposal for a new camp program that Interstates is interested in starting. Each team was assigned a Northwestern business student and an Interstates employee to use as resources as they created a 3-5 minute PowerPoint presentation. Groups presented their solution to a panel of judges from Interstates and the NWC Business Department’s Board of Advisers.
The students from the Career Academy learned a lot and had a great experience. Two students from the Career Academy were on the 3rd place team. Alexandra Parks (Sioux City Career Academy), Camden Hale (Sioux City Career Academy), Shaylee Brown (Spencer), and Parker De Weerd (Sioux Center) were on the 3rd place team.

- Winter Is Coming
With the cooler temperatures upon us, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual, so it is important that students have the right winter weather clothing. When the temperature feels like 15 degrees or lower, then students are kept inside for recess and activities. Students should be prepared for the cooler weather with a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves. If your student does not have access to cold weather apparel, please contact our school office.
- School Closure Information
The weather in Iowa can be unpredictable. If the weather requires us to delay the start of our school day, cancel school for the day, or dismiss school early, information will be sent to families through Blackboard, our communication system. In addition, this information is posted to our social media sites and the District website.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your student at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact our school office to let us know.
Let's Talk
An engaged community makes our District stronger. That is why we have made it easy for you to connect with us whenever it is convenient for you. We encourage you to take advantage of Let’s Talk!, our 24/7 online submission site. Reach out with your ideas, questions, concerns, and praise. To make a submission, please visit http://www.siouxcityschools.org/lets-talk/.
Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
